Parents often ask how they can support their child’s learning at home. The answer I most often give them is READ! Read to your child, with your child and listen to your child read. The benefit is long-lasting and sustaining.
But what about math? A fun approach to stimulate interest and critical thinking in math is to involve art. Art and math have a lot in common with each other. You can see art in math and the math of art. Patterns, symmetry, spatial reasoning, geometry etc… are all a part of art and math! Having your young child string beads in color or shape patterns is creating an understanding of patterning. Patterns can be found everywhere! Wallpaper, carpet, phone covers, clothing are just a few examples. Encourage your child to be a pattern “detective” and be on the lookout for patterns. Looking at a butterfly or a building’s architecture can bring about lots of conversations about symmetry. Even listening to music with it’s rhythmic beats or music videos with the elaborate choreography can spark an interest in math. Making a link between math and art strengthens both of them.
Give it a go this week with your child!

"IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A CARDINAL" ARTICLES
Clinton High School Prepares for the 18-19 Enrollment Process
Submitted by: Jarrod Steffens, Clinton High School Principal
This school year is far from over, but Clinton High School is already making preparations for the 2018-2019 school year. Students and staff will soon be working through the enrollment process that finalizes with students selecting their coursework for the 18-19 school year.
Students will be working in their Cardinal Time advisory classes throughout the month of February to look at their Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP), progress towards graduation requirements, course catalog offerings and classes in their field of interest. The end goal is students and parents selecting classes for next school year.
A very important part of this process will be parent/guardian involvement. We will have two days where we would love to see parents join us. One of those is on Thursday, March 15th which is listed on the district calendar as Parent Conferences from 1-8pm. For that day, current CHS Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors will be coming in with their parents/guardian for a 20 minute conference with their Cardinal Time advisor. Cardinal Time advisors and students will be communicating with parents in the upcoming weeks on scheduling this 20 minute meeting. During that meeting the student, teacher and parent/guardians will go over the potential selected classes for next year, 4 year course of study, standardized test results, and other pertinent information. Parents will also have the opportunity to give the district feedback in the way of a parent survey on that night. Students must attend with a parent or guardian on that day in order to get first choice of classes they want for next year. Our goal is to have as close to a set schedule for a student as possible as a result of this process.
To help guardians prepare for the enrollment night on March 15th, CHS is also hosting an informational night on Thursday, March 8th at 7pm . During this meeting, parents will have the opportunity to go over course catalog, course offerings, discuss AP/Dual Credit classes, NCAA eligibility, A+ program and Clinton Technical School classes/programs.
During this time of preparing for next year we are also working on preparing for our newest CHS Cardinals who will be joining us from 6 schools that feed to us (Clinton Middle School, Holy Rosary, Clinton Christian Academy, Leesville, Davis and Shawnee Mound). Clinton High School Counselors will be visiting each of these schools in the upcoming weeks to help prepare students for their class selection and 4 year plan as well.
On Thursday, March 8th at 6pm , we will host a parent information night for incoming Freshman to go over information pertinent to a successful transition to CHS. Coaches and Sponsors will be there to showcase their sports/clubs/activities as well to help get incoming students involved as soon as possible.
We look forward to partnering with students and parents to prepare for a great 18-19 school year. The enrollment process drives our set-up of classes for a successful school year, and we appreciate everyone’s input in making it happen. Please feel free to email or call with any questions about the enrollment process for the 2018-2019 school year.

Making a Difference, One Donut at a Time
Submitted by: Jill Ragan, CECC Teacher and Director
Recently, CECC hosted its third annual Donuts with Dad event, and had the best attendance to date. With close to one hundred percent of the students’ families represented, the families enjoyed activities that included constructing structures, creative arts, sensory play, and of course donut-eating. We would like to say thank you to Earnie Staashelm, Jake Kenney, Jake Fowler, Jason Abner, and Jarrod Boyles who volunteered to spend some quality time with a child that day.
Research would tell us that men play an important role in the lives of children. Positive interactions during the early learning years help lay a strong foundation for healthy development later in life. Whether that positive male role model is a father, grandfather, uncle, appointed guardian, or a treasured family friend, they are fostering a realistic image of growing up into an adult. In short, young boys grow up to be men and young girls grow up to interact with men, so all the more important to have those early positive interactions. As Harold B. Lee said, “The most important work you will ever do is within the walls of your own home.”
It is never too late to make a difference in the lives of our children, or to develop a new ritual/routine to enjoy with your child. Perhaps all you need is nine minutes a day: three minutes when they wake up, three minutes when they come home, and three minutes before they go to bed (www.ctf4kids.org). Sadly, we can’t all meet around the dinner table every evening and discuss life, but we can make a commitment to cherish every moment we get.
We applaud all the men who were able to attend our Donuts with Dad day. Anytime you have nearly one hundred percent attendance at a school event is A Great Day to be a Cardinal.
