NO SCHOOL- TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3rd
Dear Havel Families,
I am super excited to share that this year we are partnering with Nothing bundt Cakes to promote reading!
Every student will receive a monthly tracking sheet to record the titles of books that they have read along with the number of minutes spent reading. The goal is to read 400 minutes every month. Now that may seem like a lot but when you break it down, it’s 100 minutes per week or 13 minutes a day. Students can count minutes spent reading for silent reading or for our younger learners, they can count the minutes that an adult reads to them (for example, a story before bed). Chapter books count too! Just record the chapter and the minutes spent daily reading each chapter.
At the end of every month, the tracking sheets will get turned into me. They can turn them in one of two ways. The sheet can be emailed to me (nicole.reynolds@uticak12.org) or the students can return the sheet to their classroom teacher and the teacher will pass it along to me. I will then give each student a certificate to receive a free bundlet (mini cake) from Nothing bundt Cakes located on Hall Road. They do have curbside pickup if you are uncomfortable going inside the store. This program will run from November through March.
If you have any questions regarding this program please feel free to ask! You can either email me or call the office.

Virtual Music Update
Hello Havel Hawks and Families! Although this year is off to a different start than we are used to, lots of great things are still happening. Havel Elementary musicians are busy learning about and making music, and things are going well during Music Class.
Kindergarten and First Grade students have been focusing on steady beat activities and singing games. The students have learned a few songs, and have started to learn basic note values (Ta and Tee Tee, quarter note and two eighth notes) and rest (silence). The students and I have also done many picture books and movement activities to get our bodies moving with music.
Second and Third Grade students explored music from Africa. They used African music when learning the following music concepts: melodic contour (shape/direction of the music), rhythm, call & response (echo music), and steady beat. They also explored African music through learning a traditional African welcome song, listening to an African folk tale, and playing singing games similar to the singing games played by African children.
Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Grade students started the year reviewing rhythmic notation, and learning a new note (four sixteenth notes, tika tika). They also explored melodic contour and musical form by following listening maps to music by American composer Aaron Copland. The students participated in class discussions comparing and contrasting several pieces of music, and composer techniques for mood/genre/style/etc.
I am very proud of my Havel musicians for their work and participation in Music Class. It is going really well, and I am pleased at how well they have adapted to this new way of learning.
