Iowa Assessment Scores for 8th Grade Students
Dear 8th Grade Parent or Guardian:
This fall your child took the Iowa Assessments. The main purpose of these tests is to help identify your child’s strongest areas and the areas in which greatest improvement is needed.
Results help teachers identify students’ strengths and areas that may need additional emphasis. The results are one additional piece of data to help enable sound decision-making and provide a focus for teachers to review and improve their instruction. Scores on nationally-normed tests are one criterion used to determine placement for the Talented and Gifted program.
Results also show parents how their student is performing in comparison to other students at the same grade level nationally. The Iowa Assessment score that reflects this comparison is called a national percentile rank (NPR). If a student’s national percentile rank in Reading is 71, then the student scored as well as or higher on this subtest than 71% of his/her same-grade peers in the national norm group. The percentile ranks range from 1 to 99. The national average percentile in all subtests is 50.
Results will be sent home with Report Cards this Friday. If you have any questions regarding these tests or the information that is being sent to you about how your child did on these tests, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.

Scoliosis Screening Volunteers Needed
Every year a scoliosis screening is held for 6th and 8th grade TRMS students. Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. Our next screening at TRMS will be held on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2016, from 8:30am to 11:30am. We need parents who are willing to attend a 2-hour volunteer training in preparation for this important screening. This training will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2016 from 10am to 11:30am. If you have volunteered before and attended training in the past two years you don’t have to attend this training.
If you would like to help but are unable to attend the volunteer training, we still need hall/door monitors and check-in desk helpers the day of the screening. please contact Laura Hoover at laura_hoover@hotmail.com if you are interested in volunteering. Thank you in advance!
