Spring 2016

3rd Grade Project

I had an amazing time working with Mrs. Smathers' 3rd grade class during their slavery, Underground Railroad, and Civil War unit. They read I Thought My Soul Would Rise and Fly by Joyce Hansen as a class. We added a lot of picture books and Informational Texts about slavery, the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman, and Sojourner Truth to extend their learning. As a project, we decided to sew a South Carolina made up of patches on a sewing machine as a class. They enjoyed it so much, they asked to sew something for themselves like Clara did in Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt. They each sewed a scrappy South Carolina by hand, that are just beautiful!

SCASL 2016

I had the pleasure of attending SCASL in Myrtle Beach in early March. I learned so much from our presenters, and even had the chance to present as well with the help of Ida Thompson, Diana Carr, and several other RCSD1 librarians. I can't wait to share all of the information with our teachers!

Superintendent Visit

We had the pleasure of hosting Superintendent Witherspoon as our guest reader for Katie's Cabbage with our 3rd graders. Our students enjoyed meeting him, and we all had a great time reading together.

Courtyard Garden

We are working to get donations to turn our courtyard into a working garden. At this time we are hoping to receive a donation from Lowes. Next we will finish writing up a grant to get the rest of the materials needed to make our garden a success.

We are hoping to not only beautify our courtyard, but get students to take charge of their learning. We can use this activity to address healthy eating habits, spending time outdoors each day, and what it takes to grow our own food. We are excited to see what fruits and vegetables we can grow. We hope to have a working garden before we leave for the summer.
