High School Mathematics Update
April 2020
Financial Literacy Expo
Pasco County Schools, in partnership with our valued community partners, is excited to host a Financial Literacy Expo event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 6th at Sunlake High School. This event is designed to help parents/guardians, employees, community members and students with financial planning matters. There will be an expo-style event in the cafeteria showcasing our valued financial experts. There will also be brief informational sessions that we encourage you to attend.
Please go to the Financial Literacy web page, where you will find:
- a flyer to advertise this event to all stakeholders electronically (printed flyers will be sent to schools for advertisement, as well);
- an FAQ document that we are asking schools to distribute to any staff members who may not access email, so that everyone is able to answer parent questions about the event and how to register;
- how Pasco staff can earn professional development points for attending sessions;
- and, links to register.
The district will send recorded messages and emails home, post information on social media, and send out a media advisory. Please share/retweet all social media posts you see about the expos. If you have any questions about the expo events, please contact Tina Stavrou or Odalis Tavares.
Intervention supports - IXL and Aleks
As we start to prepare for next year, we would love to have some feedback on which program you would prefer for interventions. There are currently two programs we use: IXL in high school and Aleks in Middle School. Please read through the descriptions below and then select this link to vote for your preference for the 2020-2021 school year.
Aleks
Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics she is most ready to learn. As a student works through a course, ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are also retained. ALEKS courses are very complete in their topic coverage and ALEKS avoids multiple-choice questions. A student who shows a high level of mastery of an ALEKS course will be successful in the actual course she is taking.
ALEKS also provides the advantages of one-on-one instruction, 24/7, from virtually any Web-based computer for a fraction of the cost of a human tutor.

IXL
Gain fluency and confidence in math! IXL helps students master essential skills at their own pace through fun and interactive questions, built in support, and motivating awards.

Math Teacher of the Month
Christina Ailstock from Fivay High school is our April teacher of the month. Her teammate shared:
Christina is an amazing team player and leader. Her knowledge of different teaching ideas and methods has been extremely helpful to the entire Algebra 1 staff this year. When it comes to implementing technology into the classroom on limited supplies, Christina not only excels, she has mastered a number of apps that have made teaching algebra easier for teachers, and more enjoyable for the students.Teacher Spotlight
