Fun facts
- Thank you so much for coming to Open House! I could tell the students were so proud to show off all of their hard work! It was nice to see you all!
- March was creative writing month! We participated by using Nightzookeeper.com. This is an online writing tool and class blog. The online writing tool suggests age appropriate vocabulary for students to include in their stories. It also provides objectives and helpful tips in order to give structure to their creative writing. Our class wrote a total of 1,986 words! I will be printing out the student writing and sending it home if you child participated.
- Our class is almost out of tissues. If you have an extra box or happen to think about it while at the store, please send a box in! Thank you!
- Please see the image below as I incorporate the language of the growth mindset into our classroom. Please feel free to use it at home as well!
- Please see my eBoard for any past newsletters!
- Please see Homeroom for photos and SeeSaw for individual student work!
Curriculum
Fundations
We have completed Units 9 and 10. Students can now read and spell blends with the suffixes -s, -ed, and -ing. We have also learned to find closed syllable words. Students are still working on identifying vowel teams while reading. We are now onto Unit 11, where students are learning to read and write word with long vowel sounds. We mark up these as v-e words, or vowel-consonant-e words.
Reader's Workshop
First graders have been becoming stronger readers by comparing and contrasting characters within a story. They have also focused on finding the main idea and key details within a story. We practiced all of these strategies while learning about the ocean. We will be so knowledgeable at our field trip to the Aquarium!
We have also been expanding our vocabulary by learning about similes!
Math Workshop
Students recently completed Unit 6 on addition fact strategies. We are learning to play some really fun games to practice our math facts! In one game called "Beat the Calculator", students broke into two groups. One group could use a calculator to solve a math fact, and the other group just needed to use their brains. We found out our class can solve math facts FASTER than a calculator! It was amazing! The brains kept winning! We are now onto Unit 7, which focuses on subtraction fact strategies and attributes of shapes. Please feel free to use my eBoard to access Everyday Math online and Happy Numbers so your student can practice math facts, play games, and solve interesting math problems on the computer or iPad. Please contact me if your child doesn't remember or has lost his or her username and password.
Writer's Workshop
Writers are continuing with review writing. You got to see and hear their first challenge as they read about their favorite item in their collection. Soon we will be sharing our persuasive reviews of a place or thing. They had to support their opinion and convince others why it is the best! Some ways they make their writing stronger is by adding in "expert" opinions of other students who agree with them. They can also compare their item to something else similar and tell why it is better!
Social Studies and Science
During social studies, first graders have been learning about the 7 habits. We do this through reading selections, watching video clips, and acting out scenarios. We are also learning about maps and the world around us. Students are excited for their first challenge of creating a map of the classroom!
Scientists have moved onto a new unit of studying and observing solids and liquids. Here they have identified different solids and liquids, observed the qualities of solids, and sorted solids by either color or shape. Please see Homeroom and SeeSaw for their latest work!
