MASKING IT UP
What Does the Mask Mandate Require and Allow?
When do I have to wear a mask?
You have to wear a mask when you are in public and in close contact with other people. Specifically, the order says to wear a mask when you are within six feet of a person from another household in any of the following places: (a) an indoor space open to the public; (b) a vehicle operated by a transportation service; and (c) an outdoor public space where ten or more people are gathered.
What kind of face mask is required?
The requirement allows all kinds of masks to be used—whether store-bought, homemade, or improvised from household items like scarves, bandannas, or t-shirts. The key is for the mask to cover your nostrils and mouth.
KSS STUDENT EXPECTATIONS IN RESPONSE TO COVID 19
Health & Safety Requirements:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
Face coverings will be required at all times and in all locations of Kittitas Secondary School.
Outdoor use of masks will be directed when proper spacing can’t occur and under the supervision of teachers and staff.
Requests to be exempt from the face covering mandate must include specific diagnosis to justify exclusion. All exemptions must be approved by the Kittitas County Health Officer.
PPE will be made available to all students if they can’t provide their own.
Failure to wear a face covering will result in the individual being sent home or asked to leave the premises. Repeated offenses will result in progressive disciplinary action that involves the input of the building principal and superintendent.
Health Screening:
All parents are expected to check their students for signs of illness each day prior to arriving at school using the Qualtrics Attestation Smart phone app. Students who aren’t screened prior to arriving at school will be screened by school personnel upon arrival. Students who do not pass the health screening will be isolated in the main office and sent home.
Hygiene Practices:
Handwashing will be done at designated times and regularly throughout the school day to include before and after meals, after PE, and any other identified time.
Students will not have access to the locker rooms until further notice. If you have PE, please come to school in PE-appropriate clothing.
Students will not be assigned lockers or be allowed to use lockers until further notice.
Each classroom will have sanitizer and masks available. Students will be expected to sanitize their hands upon entering and exiting a classroom.
No physical display of affection (PDA).
No sharing of personal items (drinks, clothes, etc)
Non-essential students' personal items such as, but not limited to, blankets, stuffed animals, and athletic equipment will be prohibited until further notice
Cleaning and Disinfecting:
Before exiting class, students will disinfect their workspace accordingly.
Physical Distancing
Classrooms:
Students are expected to maintain 6ft distance within the classroom and follow instructions given by the classroom teacher to ensure safety of students and staff.
Hallways:
Students will be asked to follow directional signals when transitioning in the hallways.
While transitioning between classrooms, students will not be allowed to stand in groups.
Office:
Only 3 people will be permitted to wait inside the office area at a time.
Students will not be permitted to pick up teacher’s copies or mail.
Students need to wait at the Copy Center/Attendance window for copies or tardy notes.
Before School:
Students will not be allowed into the building prior to 7:55 a.m.
Buses will drop off students at approximately 7:55 a.m.
Kids will be met at the door by school staff to verify that they have completed the at-home attestation. If they have not, they will go to another area in the commons to get their temperature taken and sign in.
Students that are on the list will go directly to their first period classroom.
Students may wait in their cars either with their parents or by themselves. Students will not be allowed to sit in other students’ cars before school.
After School:
Students will be authorized to leave campus immediately following their dismissal from 5th period to prevent loitering, unless meeting with a teacher. Students will not be allowed to sit in their cars in the parking lot.
Students will not be allowed to re-enter the building unless accompanied by an adult or in an emergency situation.
Attendance
In-person Attendance Policies and Procedures
See pages in Coyote Pride Student Handbook. These policies and procedures have not changed.
Remote/Online Attendance Policies and Procedures
One important aspect of our weekly schedule is timely attendance when students are learning remotely. Students will be expected to check into all of their scheduled classes on time each day.
To be in attendance remotely:
Students log into Newrow on time for each class.
Ways to stay current on daily work:
Daily interaction with teachers (emails, texts, video calls, phone calls, messages)
Evidence of participation in activity or assignment.
If a student does not engage or demonstrate participation in any way, the student will be marked as absent. In order to be marked “in attendance” for a whole day, a student must participate in at least three out of their five classes in a given school day. A student may appeal this expectation with the principal, dean of students, and teacher on a case-by-case basis.
COVID-related excused absences are defined as
Absences related to the student’s illness, health condition, or medical appointments due to COVID-19;
Absences related to caring for a family member who has an illness, health condition, or medical appointment due to COVID-19;
Absences related to the student’s employment or other family obligations during regularly scheduled school hours that are temporarily necessary due to COVID-19 until other arrangements can be made, including placement in a more flexible education program;
Absences due to the student’s parent or guardian’s work schedule or other obligations during regularly scheduled school hours, until other arrangements can be made;
Absences due to the student’s lack of necessary instructional tools, including internet broadband access or connectivity;
Other COVID-19 related circumstances as determined between school and parent/guardian or emancipated youth.
For all COVID related excused absences, parents/guardians are expected communicate with the school.
