February 2023

Gaylord Middle School students competed last Monday and Tuesday in our 1st Annual Winter Olympics. There were 13 events which included snow sculptures, ultimate smore making competition, snowshoe racing and many more. We had a great time with our students and some friendly competition. Thank you to all of our parent help. Mrs. Fennell and Mrs. Yaske/Mrs. Lanter tied for the win in the 7th grade. Mrs. Davison’s seminar class edged out Mrs. Elgart by ½ point to win the 8th grade. Be sure to check out Gaylord Schools' Facebook for some pictures of the Olympics.

Progress Reports along with the midwinter NWEA Growth Reports will be sent home with students this week.

Athletics

Gaylord Middle School track and field will tentatively start April 3rd right after school. The coaches are Mr. Berkshire, Mrs. Baril, and Mrs. Fitzgerald. Students must have a physical on file in the GMS office in order to participate.

The cafeteria stage, locker rooms, and office (small items/jewelry only) are overflowing with lost and found items. If students are missing items please have them check the lost & found.

8th Grade High School Course Selection

GHS counselors will be meeting with students on Wednesday, February 22nd to go over high school course selection for the 23-24 school year. The pink high school course selection sheets are due back at GMS by March 2nd.

Band Festival

Both the 7th and 8th grade band students will be performing at Petoskey Middle School on Thursday, March 2nd, in the District Band Festival. The 7th grade will be performing at 4:45 p.m. and the 8th grade will perform at 7:50 p.m. Spectators are welcome to watch the performance in the auditorium.

Students Arriving Late/Leaving Early

Students arriving to school late must sign in at the office before reporting to class. Parents or guardians can excuse their child's tardiness by phone or by note. Students not excused will receive an unexcused tardy.

Students leaving before the end of the school day will only be released to a parent or guardian. The office must be notified by a parent or guardian, in writing or by phone, whenever a student is to be released to someone other than themselves.

Parent Portal

Parent Portal is a great way to keep up-to-date on your student's grades and attendance. Please contact the office for your sign-in credentials. Please note that PowerSchool is no longer updating the Parent Portal phone app. The best way to access Parent Portal is through the Gaylord Schools' website. Staff email addresses are attached to this newsletter.
