St. Luke Weekly Memo
June 21 - 28, 2018
St. Luke Catholic School Vision Statement
We are a faith-filled school that embraces the spiritual, physical, emotional, and academic wellness of our community. Infused with God’s love, we guide, inspire and challenge one another to achieve our greatest potentials, believing that we have the capacity to make a difference in the world.
"And the child grew and became strong in spirit filled with wisdom; and the grace of GOD was upon him.” ~Luke 2:40
Nativity of Saint John the Baptist - June 24
Sunday's Gospel Reading
Luke 1:57-66,80 John the Baptist is born and all wonder what the child will be.
Family Connection
Names have special meanings. In our families, some people are named after parents or other relatives and ancestors. Sometimes peoples' names are symbolic, suggesting something unique about the person or recalling an event or experience related to that person's birth.
In this Sunday's Gospel, we learn that Elizabeth gives her son the name John, which means “God has been gracious.” This name sets John apart in a special way: it was normally the father's responsibility to name a child, and the name was usually a family name. The unusual nature of John's naming suggests to everyone that this is a special child.
Spend some time as a family focusing on one another's names as well as on the names of other relatives. Point out the significance of each name and how the naming took place.
Read aloud Luke 1:57-66,80. Review the parts of the story that describe how John received his name. Talk about how important names are and how we are all called to honor the name of God. Pray together the Sign of the Cross, emphasizing how we honor God's name and promise to live our lives in God's name.

4 X 4 Boundary
Families within our school community have been working very hard to complete the 4 X 4 process before the end of this school year to hopefully provide busing to families within the Lindbrook area in the future. Alberta Education has approved the 4 X 4 census that took place in the Lindbrook area. If you live in the Lindbrook area and declared yourself a Catholic on the census please come and vote on Tuesday July 10th between 7 - 10 pm at the Lindbrook hall. We need as many votes as we can get to get this process completed before the next school year. Please contact Kimberley Herrmann at kimberley.herrmann@gmail.com Thank you for all your hard work getting this far!
Coming in September Elk Island Catholic Schools will be moving to a new enhanced version of Safe Arrival to report a student absence. The function is being added to the EICS app so you can access everything in one place, but you it will still require that you have the School Messenger App installed on the phone. Your child's safety is of paramount importance to us and we appreciate your cooperation. Please read the attached document for additional information.
Valeda House
Thank you to each and everyone for your support for Valeda House. Our school raised over $800. Read the attached document about the various ways EICS schools support Valeda House.
Valeda House has reached out with an urgent situation and would like our help for a mother in need. On June 27 we will hold a Summer Parfait event during lunch recess to help us raise money. If you can donate any food, hygiene items (shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant), baby items(infant cereal, wipes & size 4 diapers), or Wal-Mart or Superstore gift cards before the end of the year we will pass them along to Valeda House to support this mom.
Our breath can be a powerful tool in managing our stress. Breathing mindfully activates our parasympathetic nervous system and signals to our body that we can relax. As we move into exams and what can often be a stressful time of year, let’s remember to take some time to tap into the power of our breath.
Below are a couple of links to some mindful breathing scripts.
