KMS Up2Date

Principal's Message
We had a very successful testing week here at KMS. It was great to see so many new faces as many of our virtual learners joined us for the in-person testing. Lots of students were able to spend the day and told me that they miss school and are looking forward to returning to full learning on April 26. As the principal, it gave me great joy to see so many students enjoying school again. Thank you for the confidence in us by sending your children to school to participate in these important assessments.
We have compiled the results of the survey for full return to school and more than 25% of current virtual students will be joining us in April. Note that students will remain on the same teams and have the same teachers as they currently do. We are finalizing bus requests and will contact those families whose children have not yet taken a bus to confirm pick-up and drop-off times, etc. As presented by Dr. Brice at the school community meeting on March 29, a scheduling shift at KMS will allow us to create pods with no more than 15 students with a few exceptions. We are doing this to keep maximum distance among the students and maintain a “teacher bubble” in each classroom that follows our current practice. The health and safety of our children, teachers, and staff are still our priority.
On behalf of the faculty and staff here at KMS, I want to wish all the members of our school community who celebrate Easter a very happy and safe day.
Check out our faculty and staff shout outs below that have been shared by our students. It has quickly become a great way to start our day here at KMS.
Wishing you a great week,
Dennis Morrell
Principal

Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Workshop Series
Rhode Island PBS Education Services is excited to announce the Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Workshop Series! Presented in both English & Spanish, in collaboration with RI Kids Count, Massachusetts Strategies for Children and RI & MA SEIU Education and Support Fund, SSIC’s goal is to support parents, caregivers and community providers with FREE tools and resources from Sesame Street that help increase successful outcomes for children, both in school and in life. Participants receive a complimentary Sesame Street care package, along with a certificate for PD hours, approved by the Center for Early Learning Professionals.
This workshop is intended for adult caregivers, parents and guardians, not for participation by children. Please register for either our English or Spanish sessions. Project made possible with generous support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB.)
Rhode Island Virtual Tutoring
Our names are Julia Hasseltine and Eli Weisbord and we are two RI high school students who recently created Rhode Island Virtual Tutoring (RIVT.) Our vision for RIVT is to organize and provide free one on one weekly tutoring sessions between high school tutors and younger students, giving older RI students an opportunity to share their knowledge. We hope to create a network of students of all ages around the state of Rhode Island. Tutoring in all of the general elementary level courses and many middle school classes will be offered at the program’s launch.
The two of us are extremely excited to share this project and we hope that the program continues to grow until we can ensure that no motivated student is left without the resources they need to thrive intellectually. Please pass this on to anyone whom you feel could benefit from this opportunity!
Free Tutoring Opportunity Launching with Schoolhouse.world
Schoolhouse.world is a new online platform from Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, that matches students around the world with free tutors. The tutors provide small-group math and SAT prep tutoring for students in grades 6-12, building on the Khan Academy curriculum. Rhode Island is one of two state-level partnerships offering this opportunity to students across the state. Registration is now live on the All Course Network (ACN) and students can sign up here on EnrollRI. There is no deadline for students to sign up (though schools will still need to approve their enrollment via the ACN), no cost to LEAs or students, and no requirement to participate. Please help us spread the word to your students, teachers, parents, and communities! More information on the partnership can be found here.
