Language Arts
Our story, A Walk in the Desert, was an expository text. This means it was nonfiction and taught us facts. Ask your child to tell you two details he/she learned about the desert. We also learned about landforms. Can your child name at least three kinds of landforms? What landforms are found in and around Ohio? I shared photos on classdojo of our cactus craft with the story's main idea and details and our math array of sunshine.
Next week will be the last week of the first unit. In addition to the weekly story the class will review the concepts learned and take the unit test on Friday. As a result, the spelling test will be taken on THURSDAY next week.
Just Right Books
Choosing a book that is "just right" for your child to read can be a challenge for any parent/grandparent. Your child knows his/her reading level based on the latest reading STAR test. In our classroom, all of the books have the reading level written on the cover. But, how can you find the reading level of a book when at home, the library or when purchasing a book? There is an app. for that! Please see the link below. It is free, easy and you can add the link to your smartphone so you have it everywhere you go. You can even teach your child to use it so they can look up books on their own.
Math
What is an array? It is a way to show repeated addition with a picture. Earlier this week I shared a short video about arrays. The class has done a great job this week on our array/repeated addition topic. This will help them learn multiplication next year. Next week we will take the topic test and move on to adding within 100 using more than one strategy. Please help your child review recognizing and writing numerals 1-100.
