Hi Room 18 Families!
We had such a blast on Halloween! I hope you all enjoyed the pictures that were sent out in Tuesday's newsletter :) I still can't believe it's November!
This week's announcements & reminders:

WTW: Test on 11/10
Book Fair link 11/7-11/10
TECH HOMEWORK:
The expectation is that students spend about 10-15 mins 4-5 times a week on this.
For the next 3 weeks your students will have keyboarding homework.
Week 1- Lessons 1-19
Week 2- Lessons 20-32 (this week)
Week 3- Lessons 33- 40
Native American Heritage Month: This month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. Each day this month, we will take the time and show our respects to just a few, of many people, who are setting a positive example and working to keep Native culture alive.
Disguise a Turkey/Family Project: Students are bringing home a blank turkey today. During the month of November, we often reflect on all we are thankful for in our lives, and try to spend quality time with our families. Please work with your student to decorate the turkey using any household items (ex. Sequins, noodles, feathers, beads, pennies, cereal, string, yarn, and/or anything else around the house) for our class bulletin board! Most importantly, have FUN! :)
Holiday Cards: All students in grades K-4 can participate!
-Use markers and white 8.5 x 11 paper (please leave 1-inch border)
-Incorporate the phrase “Happy Holidays!” in the design
-Artwork can have a nondenominational holiday theme and/or Harper theme
-Student name should be written in pencil on the back of the card for identification purposes.
-Artwork due by Monday 11/6, drop off in labeled bin at front desk
Smart Watches: Smart Watch cellular functions must be turned off during the day. Students should not receive text messages or calls on their watches, as this disrupts the classroom. As a reminder, if parents need to get a message to a student, please contact me or the Harper office. Students are free to use the office phones to contact parents if needed. Feel free to see this resource to help set "school time" on an apple watch.
Ipads: Please remind your student to charge them each night, and pack them into their backpacks for the day.
Spare shoes for PE: Students should have a spare pair of shoes that they can change into for indoor PE days in order to help keep our gym clean, as well as our classroom on days when they get to play outside on the field.
Math:
This week students worked through Chapter 5. Chapter 5 was a very short chapter. Students used Bar Models to solve addition and subtraction word problems. Students made lots of connections with Bar Models from 1st and 2nd grade which is amazing!!
ELA:
Students began their Mystery Unit this week in ELA! Students will be reading an A to Z mystery book and work through different reading skills for each chapter.
Science: The Pinball Machines turned out so amazing! Students had fun taking time to try out each other's as well! These were sent home today!!
As always, reach out with any questions!
Have a wonderful weekend!

123 MAGIC!
1-2-3 MAGIC: We will be using the 123 Magic Behavior System in our class this year.
After crafting our class norms and expectations, students signed our poster stating that they agree that they will uphold what we discussed.
If students are not following an expectation, they will first receive a verbal reminder from me.
If that same behavior continues, I will begin the count and say, "That's 1."
If it continues again, they will hear me say, "That's 2."
If the behavior continues once again I will tell them, "That's 3, take a break."
When a student is asked to “Take a Break” they will go to our calm corner spot in the classroom. A 5 minute timer will be used to time the break. A reflection sheet will be used for the student to reflect on their behavior. I will let you know if your student filled one out. Please sign and return it at your earliest convenience. I will check in with the student at some point that day to have a restorative conversation about making better choices.
Students know that it’s okay if they need to take a break, but that the expectation is that they should learn and grow from this experience.
