CALLAWAY HILLS FAMILY NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER EDITION 2022
GREETINGS CALLAWAY FAMILIES!
Wow, it is hard to believe that Parent-Teacher conferences are this week. I hope you are planning to attend to discuss your student's progress, strengths and areas for improvement with their classroom teacher. We look forward to seeing you at Callaway this week! Call if you need to make any conference schedule changes. We will do our best to accommodate.
Second Quarter is off to an incredible start. Students have settled in both behaviorally and academically. Please make sure that you stay in communication with your child's teacher throughout the quarter. Reach out via Class DOJO, read the Classroom Weekly News, keep this newsletter link handy and feel free to call with any questions or concerns. Communication is the key to supporting our students!
November is a busy month. Please reference the calendar often. Upcoming dates include PD days, Spirit Celebration Assembly, Veterans' Day Assembly and other opportunities to support and be involved at CH.
Again, please remember that school begins at 7:45. When you arrive after that time, they are considered tardy. If you are arriving at 7:46, you must escort your student to the front office and sign them in. I know this is a hassle, and mornings are hectic, but this is a JCSD policy. The policy states, "Any student arriving late or leaving early must have their parent/guardian come into the elementary office and state the reason for the student being tardy/dismissed." This procedure ensures the safety of our students. Please help us keep your student safe!
Have a great week and we look forward to seeing you throughout the month of November!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION WITH COACH REYNOLDS
In Physical Education we have really been focused on our Cardiorespiratory Health and the importance of exercising to maintain healthy heart and lungs. Grades 2-5 have completed their first PACER test for the year and will complete the Mile Run in the first couple of weeks in November. Playing by the rules of recreational and organized athletic opportunities has been the highlight of the beginning of our school year. Students are learning to understand that in order for these activities to be fun and fair for all involved, playing by the understood rules of the game is of upmost importance for the enjoyment of all who participate. Please make sure to try and have your student wear their tennis shoes on days when they have physical education class to give them the best opportunity for success. Thank You.
LIBRARY NEWS WITH MRS. WILSON
We are lucky here at Callaway Hills to be able to partner with both Missouri River Regional Library (MRRL) and the Daniel Boone Regional Library (DBRL). This means that as residents of Holts Summit we are able to hold library cards at both facilities and have access to all their resources. As a resident of Holts Summit myself I find the DBRL branch located in the Holts Summit Plaza very convenient. Library cards at both facilities are FREE! Please stop by and see all the wonderful things our local libraries have to offer.
Grades 1-5 have started the DBRL yearly Book Cover Contest. Grades 1-3 will be judged as a group and grades 4-6 will be judged as a group. Winners will be selected from each age group and from each participating school. Contestants must use the special form paper provided, not folded or creased, and all entries must be received by November 28, 2022. Entries may be turned into me before the deadline (so I have time to run them by the library) or at any of the DBRL branches on or before the deadline.
MUSIC WITH MR. VEILE
It's the best time of the year for music classes - Holiday Season! Callaway Hills has been getting spooky with Halloween and autumn songs, books, and projects. Our favorites have been The Little Old Lady Who Isn't Afraid of Anything and the body percussion videos for Spooky Skeleton and In the Hall of the Mountain King.
November means Veterans Day, and all families and their veterans are invited to join us. Our third-grade classes will host an assembly on Thursday, November 10th at 8:30. All students in grades K-5 will be singing at this assembly. Afterwards, all veterans are invited to join us for coffee and donuts. Please RSVP to Mr. Veile (eric.veile@jcschools.us) by November 7.
To make the assembly extra special we are asking any students with family members or friends who are veterans or active duty military to submit a picture for our pre-assembly slide show. Please include:
Name of the veteran
Branch of service and years served
Rank as they left the service
Name of student or teacher who is related to the veteran
Picture of the veteran that shows a visual of the service they performed in the military.
An email is the easiest way to submit a digital picture and the above information. Hard copies of photos may also be submitted in an envelope with the student’s name and class. These photos will be scanned and returned.
December is fast approaching, too. On December 15 the second and third-grade classes will present a winter concert at 6:00 PM in the school gym. All members of the Callaway Hills community are invited to join us to help get in the holiday spirit.
Information has gone home with your students about both the Veterans Day and winter concert performances. If the papers did not reach you, please contact me for a fresh copy.

COUNSELING CORNER WITH MRS. PARKS
POLITE is the NOVEMBER Character Trait. During our weekly counseling lessons, students will be participating in discussions regarding what Polite looks like and sounds like in a classroom and around our school. These ideas will help define what Polite behavior is at CH.
What is it? Polite is having or showing behavior that is respectful and considerate of other people. Polite citizens show understanding of and care for other people's feelings, they have manners, say please and thank you, and are courteous to others.
Students who are recognized for showing this trait are given verbal feedback with Cougar Cash to spend at our Cougar General Store, presented with written WooHoos to celebrate success with the Mrs. Pistel, and given whole class compliments. The CH Staff will be looking for students in all settings who are exhibiting this character trait, while continuing to look for Respectful, Responsible, and Self-Disciplined citizens as well. We are building Students of Character at Callaway!
Attendance letters were sent out for the first time two weeks ago. Sending letters is district policy and the letters are auto-generated. We understand that students will be out due to illness, appointments, and other important family matters, but we appreciate a notification when this occurs. Our Callaway Hills' attendance goal is 90% of the student population attending school 90% of the time. In-seat attendance is the best way to foster learning and growth. When students miss school, it is hard to replicate these learning experiences and students can fall behind quickly. Again we understand that absences will occur for various reasons. Your continued support is appreciated! Please call with questions.
FREE/REDUCED LUNCH FORM
Hello Callaway Hills Family,
As shared in last month's newsletter, breakfast is free to every student until further notice. All students are eligible to participate, regardless of their free or reduced price meal status. However, please note that this program does not include lunches, only breakfast.
If we determine the program is successful based on participation and financial considerations, then it is possible the program will be extended for future years or to additional schools. It is important that families who are eligible complete the Free & Reduced Meal application in order to ensure program success.
In order to receive free or reduced price lunches you will still need to qualify through the application process. If you have not completed a Free & Reduced Meal Application for the 2022-2023 school year, please be sure to do that as soon as possible. You can request an application at the front office of the school or access one online HERE.
Please feel free to contact the Nutrition Services Department via email (nutritionservices@jcschools.us) or phone at 573-659-3123 if you have any questions about this new program or about completion of the Free & Reduced Meal Application.
Thank you,

POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORTS
DONATIONS NEEDED FOR HOLIDAY SHOPPING AT COUGAR GENERAL
We need your help! We are needing items for the upcoming holiday season. Cougar General's Holiday Store is a chance for students to buy gifts for others with the Cougar Cash they have earned for positive behavior. Here are some examples of what you could donate: wrapping paper, gift bags, gift tags, jewelry, mugs, small trinkets, small toys, markers, scarves, gloves, small stuffed animals, journals, calendars, ornaments, binders, folders, ink pens, individually wrapped food items like Goldfish, boxed Mac-n-Cheese, pretzels, Cheese-Its, hot chocolate, etc. You may send items with your child to school or bring them in. If you would like to make a monetary donation, we would appreciate that as well. Please drop any donations off at the office with Mrs. Ahart. We thank you for helping us and donating to our school.
