Cooper Mountain Newsletter
March 1, 2018
Dear Cooper Mountain Families,
As I write this newsletter, I hear parents arriving for their conference time with teachers, and excited children asking to go to the Book Fair. The door is alive with entries and exits and conferences must be going well because there's a lot of smiling in the halls! A year ago our conferences were cancelled, so I am so grateful that you have this precious time with your child's teacher. You heard information about growth and progress and undoubtedly areas that are still new learnings for your child. And isn't that what school is all about? Our role as educators is to find that "next step" that moves your child forward in their continuum of learning - there will always be a "next step" and we need your partnership.
Parents, guardians, grandmas, and grandpas, you already know you are the most important and influential adults in your child's life. When you partner with the teacher to praise effort and support new learning the impact is exponential. Thank you for your presence this week - your child is the winner!
Don't forget to visit the Book Fair if you haven't already. It's open from 9:00-11:30 on Friday and reading together with your child is still one of the most effective achievement booster activities you can pursue, not to mention the benefit of sitting close together to share healthy conversation about a book. Come purchase a book or two, support the school and enjoy literature together. Now you're the winner!
Take care and have a lovely weekend,
Kristin

Announcements and Updates
This Week's PTO Meeting:
This Tuesday the PTO hosted our School Board Representative, Becky Tymchuk, the Executive Administrator for Facilities, Paul Odenthal, and the Director of Public Safety, Rick Puente. Becky presented information on the upcoming Local Option Levy. Paul and Rick described their roles in the district and also fielded many questions and concerns regarding student safety in our school and neighborhood. I was grateful for their presence and support for Cooper Mountain, and for the passion that our PTO (you!) demonstrated toward caring for our young citizens, your children. Thank you for your attendance, parents!Safety Concern
Parents, a local citizen has called in to express a safety concern in her neighborhood. Many of you park on Sarala and walk up the sidewalk to pick up your child. This alleviates congestion in the parking lot, and we are very appreciative of that gesture. The concern comes from the congestion that is caused when several cars stack up right at the corner of 170th and Sarala. Neighborhood residents are having trouble navigating around the corners, especially when car doors are left open on the street side of the car and when children are crossing the street unseen by cars turning off of 170th and onto Sarala. Another option would be to park further down Sarala (east) or on Henderson Court.
Walking School Bus
Would you like your child to be able to walk to school safely? Would you like your child to get some exercise in the morning on the way to school? Would you like to spend time walking rather than sitting in a car in the morning? Then a Walking School Bus may be for you! I have been consulting with Lynne Mutrie who is the Safe Routes to School Consultant for the Beaverton School District, and in an effort to reduce fuel emissions, reduce parents' time in the drop off line in the morning, and to increase fitness and energy we would like to implement the first Cooper Mountain Walking School Bus. The Walking School Bus is a route of parents and students who meet at a location in our attendance area and walk to school in the morning. I would like to start with one day a week, and I need your help! If you, as a parent or guardian, would like to volunteer to help me organize a safe route, please contact me. Let's get this started!
STEAM Fair
Our Science Fair is broadening its scope to include STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. You may buy Science Fair boards in our Student Store until March 22!
Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
I have shared with you that Beaverton School District has launched a campaign to reduce carbon emissions and resultant pollution by asking all of us to TURN OFF OUR ENGINES while we are waiting in the parking lot. The air around our student walkways and in the undercover area smells strongly of automotive fuel during dismissal time in the afternoon. Please consider modeling this environmentally friendly practice and improving the air quality around Cooper Mountain School. Turn off your engines while you wait! Click on the link below for facts about idling.
Donor's Choose
Thank you to those of you who donated to our "Moving Students are Learning Students" project. We were hoping to purchase 2 Hokki stools for every classroom. Unfortunately, our project did not fund. If you donated to the fund, you should have received an email with a link to either fund another account or "send Ms. Zindle a gift card." We would love it if you select the gift card option as Ms. Zindle will use those cards to purchase at least a couple of stools for the school. Please let me know if you need assistance with this, and thank you for your generosity!
