Reading/Literacy
This week in literacy we read Testing the Ice about Jackie Robinson and worked on time hops in the story. We discussed how authors use these flashbacks to tell a more complete story and help the reader understand the character's perspectives better. Next week we will be listening to a story, Faithful Elephants, and examining how things/subjects/topics aren't always what they seem.
Math
This week in math we are finishing up our Geometry Unit. We will take the test at the end of the week depending on your child's MAP testing schedule. Please look for corrections next week. We are also taking our Measurement of Academic Progress (MAPs) test this week. Please be sure to check with your child about their scores!
Next, we will begin our fraction unit. We will kick off the week reviewing adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators. Then we will work with uncommon denominators and finally, equivalent fractions. Once again, multiplication is going to have a big impact on math when determining greatest common factors and least common multiples. Study Jams, Math Antics and Learnzillion all have videos on their websites to help explain fractions.
As the second quarter winds down, and we launch into the third quarter, please be checking Power School frequently for grade updates. The third quarter in math is a tough one as we learn many new skills involving fractions.
Science
This week in Science, we continued learning about the different cloud types and the weather they bring. We also took a look at what air pressure does. On Tuesday, January 24th we will have a Weather quiz. Study guides will be coming home this week.
