What Do We Do Next?

The PHS Community:

Over this long weekend, I had some time on Saturday to play tennis with my daughter, spend some time with friends at Dillon Beach on Sunday, and today, go crabbing with two other principals in the Petaluma City School system. The weather was cool but gorgeous, a reminder about the wonderful place we live in.

This weekend, I also did a lot of thinking about the events of last week at Stoneham Douglas High School. I went on their school website where images of typical school life much like ours at Petaluma High were displayed - academic accomplishments, athletic contests, cheerleaders smiling. But for now, there is no normalcy in Parkland. 14 students and 3 staff members lost their lives. Students around the nation are speaking out and organizing, determined not to let the events at Stoneham Douglas fade away. Already, there are announced days of action on March 14th, March 24th, and April 20th.

During the next two weeks, our staff will engage in conversation about how we will respond. Please stay tuned to this space and our website for updates. We need everyone's voice to decide on our next steps. We will continue to do everything we can to educate your children in a safe and secure school. In order to do this, change will be necessary both locally and nationally.

Reminders for upcoming events:

  • AP Honors Evening (if your child will be taking an Honors or AP class in 2018-19) THIS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd at 6PM in the Multi Use Room

  • We will host Casa Grande in NCS Basketball Tuesday evening at 7PM.

  • The grading period ends on Thursday!

Have a great week!

Girls Varsity Open Ellison Field With Dominating NCS Win!

Our varsity girls soccer team opened the NCS playoffs and the new Ellison Field with a convincing 7-2 victory over the De Anza Dons. Using superior speed and a dominant passing game, the Trojans controlled midfield and established themselves early in the contest. Coach Babala had the chance to get everyone in the game to enjoy the victory and to be able to say they were the first to win at Ellison Field!

Girls Varsity Soccer Fall in NCS Quarters

A brilliant season for the young Petaluma Trojans girls varsity came to an end on the road at Kennedy High School Saturday night. The two teams battled into the second half before Kennedy found the net late in the contest. Though disappointing, this squad has much to celebrate. They will miss the seniors who made this such strong team, but also know this is a young team that will be back to compete next year. Well done, Trojans!

Crab Feed a Smashing Success!

Thank you to everyone who supported our student athletes by showing up at the Annual PHS Athletic Boosters Crab Feed Saturday night at Herzog Hall. It looks like more than $35,000 was raised for our student athletes! Thank you for your amazing support!

AP Honors Evening February 22nd @6PM - Now Including Math 3 Honors

Don't forget to put February 22nd on your calendar. If your student is planning on taking an honors or AP course in the 2018-19 school year, parents need to hear the specifics from staff so you are prepared to support your child. Watch next week's update for more detailed information!

Please note we have added a session for Math 3 Honors. There will be a short presentation in the Multi Use Room starting at 6PM. See you there!

Our Ag. Mechanics teams consisting of Max Poncia, Joe Yerion and Andy Ghirardelli placed 12th of 35 teams and our Light Horse Evaluation team consisting of Freshmen, Madalyn Elliott and Emily Cooper made their first appearance placing in the top 20! Petaluma Girls Varsity Basketball Reach Perfection!

Less than a minute into the SCL Championship game versus Analy at SRJC, leading point scorer and rebounder Jaden Krist went down with a knee injury. Faced with the loss of such a key player, a lesser team might have folded. But these Trojans were determined to get there nonetheless. Despite a big night from Sheriene Arikat, the Trojans trailed most of the way. With four seconds to go, Kelsey Martin was at the line. In the clutch, she sank a free throw to send the game to overtime. From there, the Trojans opened up a lead that held up to the end. 12-0 in league play and perfect in the tournament! A perfect league season in the final SCL season. Well done, girls, and Coach Ratshin and his staff.
