Office for Schools

Diocese of San Diego – December 2014

“This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mk 1:15).

This short passage from Mark represents Jesus’ first words spoken in the first historically written Gospel (c. 65 C.E.). While it may not typically be associated with Christmas, it can strike us as a point of inspiration in the time of Advent waiting, because it represents the fulfillment of all that we anticipate at this time. The profundity of this statement is the realization that the kingdom of God—the same Kingdom that we pray to come in the Our Father—is already here. If, as Jesus preaches, the kingdom of God is “at hand”, then we can assume that with Jesus’ coming, the kingdom of God has effectively broken into our human history. His is a kingdom characterized by justice, peace and love. Now THAT, friends, is worth celebrating this Christmas!

On a lesser theological note, but no less sincere, our hope is that this Christmas brings the blessings of Emmanuel and his kingdom to you and yours—blessings of justice, peace and love. May the “God with us” continue to journey with you throughout this holy season.

Merry Christmas!

Lord, Jesus,

through the intercession of our patron saints,

San Diego and Our Lady of Refuge,

we beg you for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit

upon all of us called to be your disciples

and members of your Church.

Bless us to be obedient servants,

as you were obedient

in loving response to the Father’s love,

and to love one another

as you have first loved us.

Bless us with happy marriages and holy families,

with bishops, religious, deacons and priests

to image your presence among us,

and with dedicated lay people,

both married and single,

to be signs of your love in the world.

Help us to embrace

the mission you have entrusted to us,

in lives of fidelity, holiness and compassion.

San Diego, pray for us.

Our Lady of Refuge, pray for us.
