Happy December and Happy Friday, Mill Creek!
As we head towards Winter Break, there is always a great deal of excitement and happenings at Mill Creek. The many Winter Holidays lend themselves to a celebratory atmosphere, which, arguably, is the most enjoyable part of the Winter Holiday season. Part of this Season of Celebration involves upcoming Holiday Classroom Celebrations. For your information, this, year's Classroom Celebrations that will occur just prior to Winter Break will have guidelines similar to those that were instituted for our Halloween Classroom Celebrations. In regards to food...
- Food consumption will occur for less than 15 minutes.
- During food consumption, students will be spaced as far apart as feasible.
We just started to enjoy a fun and festive month, and we look forward to the weeks of celebration and learning ahead!
Thank you!

Since last Sunday night, the Jewish families in our Community have been celebrating the annual Jewish Festival of Lights, Hanukkah! The Holiday ends on the evening of this Monday, December 6. Hanukkah is an 8 night celebration centered upon what is considered a miracle in Jewish culture/religion – oil needed to light a menorah (a multi-branched candelabra used in Jewish religious practice) for a reclaimed holy temple's rededication lasted eight nights when the oil on hand was only enough to last one night. In celebration of this event/miracle, Jewish families light the Hanukkah menorah each night, adding a lit candle for each progressive night of the celebration. The week+ long celebration also involves singing songs, traditional Jewish food, playing the dreidel game, and exchanging gelt (gold coins) (which are often represented by golden-wrapped chocolate - yum!).
As our Jewish teachers, staff, and community members celebrate, please join me in wishing them a Holiday that continues to be filled with peace and light!

Instructional Spotlight - Ms. Binkley, 2nd Grade
Recently, Ms. Binckley’s 2nd grade class dissected owl pellets as a part of their science unit on habitats. After learning about food chains, the class proposed 2 questions: Are owls consumers or producers? Are owls herbivores, carnivores, or omnivores? Working in pairs, students pulled apart their owl pellets to discover many small bones. They used a bone identification chart to see what small creatures the owl may have eaten. After the experiment, the class concluded that owls are consumers who are carnivores. It was an awesome hands-on way to see food chains in action!
