Prestons Post
Term 4, Week 4
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to our Week 4 newsletter.
What a super start we have had to the term. It is hard to believe we are about to head into Week 5 – Where is the time going? Before we know it, we will have our new Kinders starting with us and our Year 6 students commencing high school! It is shaping up to be a fun and exciting term with lots happening! I encourage you to continue to access the SkoolBag APP for important information regarding Term 4 events. Our Facebook Page is also a great source of information and celebration!
Grandparents day
What a great way to start the week! This week we welcomed our Grandparents to school to celebrate Grandparents day. The proud smiles of our grandparents were contagious and the whole school was smiling and enjoying the afternoon tea organised by Miss Muzyka and Mrs Boyd. Grandparents were then invited to visit classrooms and participate in a reading session and/or craft lesson. The amazement on some grandparents faces when they saw our learning spaces, led to some great discussions and stories. Thank you to everyone involved in making this event a great success.
Halloween Mufti Day
Mufti-days are always fun at Prestons, but even better when organised and run by our year 6 Students. This week Year 6 held a Halloween mufti day to help them fundraise for their farewell and purchase of a gift for the school. There were some creative and scary costumes across the school and students were invited to purchase a spider drink. Thanks to everyone's efforts, year 6 fundrasied a total of $1000. Congratulations.
Before School Supervision
Supervision before school starts at 8:30am when the gates are open. We understand that many parents may have commitments at work which require them to start early. There is a before and after school care service available and they operate in our school hall from 7am every morning. Please see our website for details. As an alternative you may be able to make arrangements with friends or neighbours for the supervision of your child in the morning. Whatever arrangements you make, you need to understand that you remain responsible for the supervision of your children before 8:30am. We ask that you do not leave your child at the school gates before 8:30 especially since they are waiting near the road unsupervised.
Kindergarten Orientation – Welcoming our newest students!
Next week we excitedly welcome our 2023 Kindergarten students. Over the next few weeks we will have three orientation sessions, where parents/carers are engaged in information sessions and the children are involved in mini lessons, with the aim of providing them with a taste of Kindergarten life. We are looking forward to connecting with our new and existing families and putting some faces to the names. Thank you to Mrs Jurinic for her organisation of the sessions and the wonderful team working alongside her. If your child is due to commence at Prestons PS in 2023 and you have not received information for Kindergarten orientation, can you, please contact our front office.
Tell Them From Me – Parent Survey (Repeated Item)
Tell Them From Me is an anonymous survey designed for all parents/carers, all staff and students from years 4-6. Responses across a range of measures including wellbeing, engagement and reflection on teaching and learning practices, provide authentic data for the school to plan and make decisions, ensuring positive outcomes for students across their school lives.
We currently have 50 response and are aiming for 100 parent/carer responses by Friday 18th November – we can do this! Please follow the link below to access and complete the survey. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this important survey.

Grow Your Mind
This term’s learner quality is Resilience. It is the ability to bounce back from adversity. When building our resilience, it is important that we understand the types of thoughts we are having. The first type are shark thoughts, and it is when you think of adversities in a negative manner. The other are dolphin thoughts, and this is when we think of a situation in a positive manner. For example, when an event at school cancels your shark thought may be ‘schools going to be boring’ and your dolphin though could be ‘yes, I get to learn something new’. By viewing negative situations in a positive manner, we can build our resilience and become better learners.

Student Library Overdue Reminder Notices
This week children with overdue library resources will be receiving an overdue notice. If your child is unable to locate a missing resource at home please ask them to check in their classroom and on the library shelf as they may have forgotten to check their book back in with our librarian and accidentally placed it directly on the shelf. Please return overdue slip with details if you believe your child has returned this book previously.
If you are unable to locate the resource, please make payment of the amount indicated on the Overdue notice sent home or replace the lost item with a similar book.
Please return all overdue resources by Friday 11 November 2022 as our library staff will be conducting a stocktake and require all resources to be returned for this to be successfully completed.
Thankyou for your assistance

Year 7 Placement in a Selective High School in 2024 (Year 5 Students 2022)
Selective high schools cater for academically gifted students with high potential who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic standard. Selective high schools help these students to learn by grouping them with students of similar ability, and by using specialised teaching methods.
If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2024, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address).
Detailed instructions on how to apply and the link to the online form will be available in early-October 2022 at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7.
Applications open on 18 October 2022 and close on 16 November 2022. You must apply before the closing date.
You must submit only ONE application for each student.
The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 4 May 2023.
Parents and Carers with no internet access are advised to access computers at a public library.
Classroom Chat with K Wallabies
Every Tuesday we catch up with our year 6 buddies where we read, dance and complete art together.
Next week we are so excited to welcome chicken eggs in our classroom. Over the next two weeks we will have an incubator with approximately 10 eggs, we will observe baby chicks hatching from their eggs and learn all about chickens.
Classroom Chat with 4 Stingrays
Term 4 has began with a bang! We are thoroughly enjoying the support of Mrs Whittles in our literacy and numeracy blocks every day. 4 Stingrays recently went on a fun and hands on learning excursion to the University of Wollongong's Innovation Campus to see their science space exhibition. Our favourite part of the day was the planetarium which took us on a space adventure to explore all the plants in our solar system. Can not wait to see what the remainder of our year holds for us before upgrading to become seniors and the new leaders of PPS.
