Visitors in the Building
Lunch is a very popular time for parents/grandparents to come and eat lunch with their student(s). The office signs in visitors between 11:00 and 2:00 who visit the cafeteria at this time. Parents can bring a sibling to lunch, but a parent cannot be in the rest of the building or at recess with their other children. If you see a parent with a child in another location of the building, please redirect them to the front office for assistance.
Thank you in advance.
Signs of Distress
A teacher or child may become physically ill, upset, cry, yell, lack control of their body or emotions. The cause of this distress is often unknown and can come on suddenly, nevertheless a private situation for each individual.
What can we do to support our staff and students?
- Leave a room or relocate students to another location when there are sign of distress. Err on the side of caution when something appears out of the ordinary.
- Take an alternate route if you are alone or turn your class around to take the scenic route to allow for privacy and ensure safety for all. It may seem that going the other way will eventually bring you back to the situation, however it may allow time for the situation to be moved or resolved.
- Contact the front office so that they can alert a CSST (Collaborative Student Support Service Team ) member that there are signs of distress in a particular location.
- When students have questions, reinforce that our efforts are always to help those in need and to keep everyone safe. The details are personal and we respect others privacy.
- If there are 2 adults handling a situation, check to see if your assistance is needed before remaining in the area. Less is often more and can be crucial in the de-escalation of a situation.
We thank you in advance for your cooperation. Talking to your students about respect, privacy, and safety would be a great topic during your community circles about appropriate responses. Please keep in mind the age of your students but consider the needs within your classroom/grade level.
A member of CSST (which includes Debra Anoff, LaShonne Wright, Liza Bane, Farah Evans, Jasmine Cummins, and Leslie Williams) would be more than willing to help you facilitate any discussions revolving around these topics with teachers or classes.
