CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP - October 28-November 1, 2019
Mr. Hill's Missive
Hello First Program Community,
Wow, what a week! For those who were at Songdo 7s this weekend, thank you for all your support! It means so much to the students to have their families out to cheer the players on, and cheer you did! Our students were phenomenal, and we are so proud of them!
We had Spirit Week, too, this past week, which is probably the students’ favorite week of the whole year! Starting off with Pajama Day, many classes had a fun focus on healthy sleep patterns or discussing “dreams”, i.e. aspirations of what students want to be when they grow up (I always hope that students answer the question, “what do you want to be?” by answering, “happy!”).
Tuesday was Twin Day where students celebrated their similarities and and dressed up as twins (or triplets) for fun!
Wednesday was Wacky! You all came out dressed as weirdly as possibly which is a ton of fun. We focus on how each of us is unique and on how we are all special in our own way. Well done showing your creativity!
Also on Wednesday was our annual visit from the ministry of education. Lucky us that they get to visit us on Wacky Wednesday! Despite seeing us when we are at our weirdest, they gave us feedback about how impressed they are with our curriculum - led by Ms. Kim - and our elementary school. We are proud to get great reviews by our Superintendent and the ministry of education.
Thursday was Halloween! We trick or treated throughout the campus and had wonderful support from middle and high school and the main office. Thank you again to all who participated to make it a memorable experience for the FP students!
In the afternoon, grades PK, K and 1 took part in fun Halloween themed activities related to music, art and PE. Meanwhile, the annual G4 Haunted House put the fear (and fun) into the hearts of the grade 2s and 3s who visited. Grade 4s hosted a sensory experience where brave visitors get to be blindfolded and then feel some terrifying Halloween delights such as witches teeth, mummy brains, and goblin guts just to name a few. Well done to all the brave participants, and congratulations for surviving!
Finally, Friday was our Super Color Day. Students came dressed in as much green, yellow, blue or red as they could wear to show off their pride in their earth, wind, water, and fire teams, respectively.
And to finish the week off, for House class, all of the FP got the special privilege of attending a high school senior volleyball game - part of the big tournament that CDS hosted all day Friday. Students made signs and slogans last week during House, and this week had the opportunity to cheer on the students of high school.
Coming up:
Please join us for our Fall Assembly, Monday morning at 9:05 in Dalton Hall.
Winter season starts on Monday! From now until March, students may wear their personal (winter/warm) jackets to and from school.

Tuesday is Day 50! CDS FP Pride Day! This is a special observance that we do three times per year: day 50, day 100, and day 150. It will be a special day where students may wear anything "CDS". The list of what students may wear is long - basically, any clothes that are CDS related - current or former - are permitted. This includes special events clothes, sports uniforms, etc.:
soccer team uniform - current
soccer team uniform - previous

bandanas, headbands, sports-towels, water-bottles, etc. from past special events such as Sports Day, etc.
orange polo - previous

In the Spotlight
This week we are featuring Music, Library, and Drama.
Music with Mr. Fejes
Happy Halloween! This has been an exciting week for everyone, especially because we have begun to learn music for our winter concert!
PreK and Kindergarteners finished up studying fast and slow and have begun learning same and different with sounds!
1st grade has begun using rhythm syllables to read and write rhythms!
2nd grade has added the note “do” to their repertoire and is beginning to learn 16th notes.
3rd grade has been studying string instruments and has finished up learning about 4-beat meter.
4th grade has started studying woodwind instruments and has continued to learn about 3-beat meter.
Library with Ms. Choo
Thursday was Halloween and the FP Library was fully decked out for the occasion, thanks to the PTA. In keeping with the theme, this week each class had a Halloween book read-aloud and a chance to borrow books from the Halloween books display. We read a variety of stories including Froggy's Halloween by Jonathan London, Ghost in the House by Ammi-Joan Paquette, Winnie the Witch by Valerie Thomas, Behind the Mask by Yangsook Choi, The Berenstain Bears Go On a Ghost Walk by Stan and Jan Berenstain, and Little Miss Sunshine and the Wicked Witch by Roger Hargreaves. Grade 2's story is one of my favorites, Behind the Mask by Yangsook Choi, a story about a Korean American boy who dresses up in his late grandfather's mask dancing clothes for Halloween.
Inside the Drama Studio
Congratulations to the 3rd and 4th grade students who performed in last week’s Drama performance of Once Upon A Time. They all had an incredible performance and showcased the drama skills they learned in Term 1. The students worked very hard throughout the term to learn memorization skills, acting and characterization skills, staging techniques as well as technical theatre skills such as lighting, sound, and public speaking. The show was a culmination of all of their hard work and they should be very proud of themselves and their classmates.
In Term 2, the 2nd grade and 3rd grade students will be performing in the FP Holiday Winter Concert on December 5th. They spent the first two weeks of the term preparing and auditioning for their upcoming plays. The students are currently doing “read-throughs” of the scripts and eagerly learning their lines.
This is sure to be another exciting term in the Drama Studio!
