The Fundamental Five book study
The Fundamental Five, by Sean Cain and Mike Laird, is the focus for our book study this semester. The fundamental five are the five critical practices that are at the core of highly effective instruction. The practices include; framing the lesson, working in the power zone, frequent small group purposeful talk, recognize and reinforce , and write critically. We are taking a few chapters at a time and targeting the practices in the classroom.
Dr. McCullough Math training
Dr. McCullough came back to KISD to train our 1st and 2nd grade teachers about number sense and foundations in Math instruction. Dr. McCullough came a few years ago to help my third and fourth grade teachers look at their TEKS and build more concrete teaching strategies within their instruction. I believe her professional development had a great impact in Phillips receiving a Distinction in Mathematics last year. We were excited to have her come back to work with our primary teachers.

Lexia
Our students are loving our new literacy software, Lexia. 212 students have passed levels on Lexia so far this year. Students work through levels 1- 18 at Phillips. When students pass levels we announce their names on the morning announcements. Awarded students get out of the Treasure Tower in the office. Teachers are delivering lessons from Lexia to struggling students during intervention time. There is a lot of hype and excitement concerning this new program.
5th grade Student Council
Our Student Council committee selected 3 students from each homeroom for our Fall Student Council. We will select another group in the Spring to serve. These great kiddos will be helping with announcements, being ambassadors for new students, selling spirit sticks, greeting students, and anything else we come up with. :)
These students were selected from their essay content, leadership qualities, and strength of character.
