ESSA and the School Library
What a busy week of "learning" we have ahead of us! It's also potentially a pretty important week. On Thursday, a small group will accompany me to the Governors' ESSA "Title Committee Meeting" to present on behalf of Alabama school libraries. (Prayers appreciated !)
I truly believe that I owe "me" to libraries! For those that don't know me, I grew up as a child of a single mother of three who worked two jobs just to keep our heads above water. But she is a smart woman who knew the POWER of reading and made sure that we visited the library. One of my earliest memories is of listening to a record borrowed from the library, learning French-- pretty high falutin' for a girl who wore hand me down clothes two sizes too big! Never once did a single Librarian tell me that I couldn't borrow anything the library had for checkout because my family was poor! I will fight to preserve that opportunity for all students in our state. From records borrowed at the library to a Master's degree (& a half)--- all because of a smart mother and some very special librarians. (And yes, I can name every one of them.)
If you would like to share your thoughts or comments with the Governors ESSA committee, you can do it via the link below. At this point, I would like for us to share what we do for students-- the magic, rigor and confidence that we can share if included in the language and funding -- inspire the committees to include us in the language of ESSA. ...... and Thank You all for keeping opportunity alive for the approx. 745,000 public school students in Alabama!
