Fenton Area Public Schools Teacher of the Year
FAPS Teacher of the Year - Mrs. Tracy Skene
Teacher of the Year Winner - Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Tracy Skene on being this year's FAPS Teacher of the Year! All of the candidates were worthy and awesome nominees - it was a very tough choice, but in the end, Mrs. Skene's work with our special needs population and finding them community partners and working environments put her on top. Her contributions to Fenton High School, the district, and community commended. Be on the lookout for us celebrating her for the next few weeks as well as all of our nominees!
Thank you to LaFontaine, our community partner, who was on hand to join in the festivities and presented Mrs. Skene with two vehicle options for a free, two-year lease!
Below you'll see photos of a very surprised Mrs. Skene being escorted through a tunnel of many of her students and colleagues as she is presented with her award, as well as other candid photos after the award was announced.

Teaching & Learning
Hispanic Heritage Month - September 15 - October 15th
FHS Spanish Students Participate
Students in Mrs. Smelis' and Mrs. Fischer's Spanish classes participated in Hispanic Heritage Month by creating traditional Hispanic artwork (see pictures below) and enjoying some traditional dishes.
Hispanic Heritage Month takes place September 15 - October 15 every year as a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, as well as Central & South America.
Papel Picado
Papel Picado means "punched paper." These decorations can be used for virtually any celebration and are also frequently used as decorative home accent pieces. During Day of the Dead, papel picado services as a symbol of the fragility of life. The yellow and purple colors often used during Dia de Muertos symbolize purity & mourning, and it is believed that the holes in the tissue paper make it possible for the souls to travel and visit us.

Mrs. Hazlett's Students Host "Tea with an Educational Theorist"
Students in the new Career & Technical Education class known as Foundations of Youth Development were learning about three main Learning Theories: Behaviorism, Cognitivism, and Constructivism and the several educational theorists who developed these ideas including:
1. John Locke
2. Jean Jacques Rousseau
3. Sigmund Freud
4. John Dewey
5. B.F. Skinner
6. Benjamin Bloom
7. Jean Piaget
Students in this class will be creating, implementing and reflecting on lessons they will be teaching to AGS Middle School students throughout the year and this will provide them with more background information in order to help them engage the younger students in these lessons.
Mrs. Hazlett had students do the research a specific theorist and hosted a "tea" where they were able to have a conversation over tea (or juice boxes and snacks) with another theorist.
Class of 2023 IB Diploma Recipients
Despite the deluge, IB Teacher, Megan Ake, and IB Coordinator, Mark Suchowski, presented IB diplomas at halftime of the HoCo football game last Friday night. Great to see them and learn how well they are doing at UM and MSU. Thanks to everyone for helping each of them achieve this lofty goal and prepare them for their work in college.
Stay tuned for plans for Gabe Lampe's presentation in the weeks ahead. Gabe was not able to make it to last Friday's game (he was out of town celebrating his sister's wedding.)
Congratulations to:
1. Sophia Crane
2. Tess DuPei
3. Lillian Knight
4. Gabriel Lampe* (presentation coming soon)
5. Madison LaRowe
IB & AP Fees - Memo #103-23 from State of Michigan
The state School Aid Act (MCL 388.1694) makes $1.2 million available to schools whose low-income students take International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and who participate in the exams associated with these courses, as well as in College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams. These exams can translate into college credit and, as a result, reduce college tuition costs for students and their families. In promoting equity for all students and removing financial barriers to students participating in AP, IB, and CLEP, exam fees for students who qualify as low-income will be reduced.
For more information: Contact IB Coordinator Mark Suchowski or the FHS Counseling Department.
Project Close Up - Washington, DC Trip
There was a meeting on Tuesday (10/10/23) during SRT travel for any student in grades 10-12 interested in learning more about the Washington, D.C. Trip (Close Up). Please encourage any student you think might be interested to come learn more - even if they may want to consider it for a future year.
For more information, contact Mrs. Patti Gray at pgray@fentonschools.org.
