Delran High School Broadcast

September 3, 2021

Delran High School, an inclusive learning community, provides educational opportunities for intellectual development while valuing the importance of cultural diversity and tradition.

A Message from Mr. Finkle!

Hello there DHS Community! Well, Labor Day is upon us which only means that the opening of school is right around the corner! The teachers have been in for the past two days preparing their classrooms and are more than ready to begin the 2021-22 school year. I am sure that your children are just as excited to begin the school year in-person unlike last year. Although we will be in-person, there are some rules and procedures that I need to communicate to all of you before the year begins.

General Rules and Guidelines

1) All students, staff, and visitors must wear a mask throughout the entire school day. The only exceptions to this will be during lunch and physical education, if the kids are outside.

2) Desks will not be sanitized between classes as per the CDC. They are required to be cleaned once per day and will be done so each evening. Sanitizer and paper towels will be available if a student wishes to clean further.

3) Temperatures will not be checked upon entering the building. The health check onus is on each family to ensure the health of the DHS community.

4) Hallways and stairwells will move from one-way to two way.

5) Student lockers will be used.

6) Gym lockers will be used.

7) Phone caddies are present in each classroom and it is mandatory for all students to place his/her/their phone in the caddy. Studies have shown that any person, particularly teenagers, who is in possession of a phone will split their attention between what is happening in front of them and the phone. We truly need 100% of each student's attention in class each and every day.

In order to keep everyone as safe as possible during lunches, we will divide the students in half by grade level.

  • Grades 12 and 9 will eat during the first half of the period and Grades 10 and 11 will eat during the second half.

  • Since we allot 40 minutes for lunch, we believe that all students will be able to get their lunch from the cafeteria and eat it within the 20 minute time limit.

  • When the first group is eating, the second group will be housed in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) WITH masks.

  • Halfway through, the faculty will facilitate a smooth transition and switch places.

  • We do have picnic tables outside and will be getting tents so that students can eat outside for the entire 40 minutes if they so choose.

  • We will have students sitting on one side of the table so that they are not facing one another during lunch.

  • We will have students scan a QR code and enter their student number so that we know where each student is sitting during lunch.

  • All students will be offered lunch this year free of charge.

Day One

All students will report to Homeroom where they will be given their most updated schedule, a Chromebook, Charger, and Protective Sleeve. They will also be opening lockers and being given paperwork. Free and Reduced Lunch packets will be given to every student. We ask that you complete them and return them by Friday! Although all students will be offered a free lunch, qualifying for Free or Reduced Lunch gives your child added benefits of fee waivers for standardized tests and college applications. In addition, the PTA will anonymously subsidize yearbooks and summer reading books for these students.

Back To School Night

Our annual Back to School Night will be virtual this year in order to mitigate as much risk as possible regarding any instances of community spread of COVID-19. .

The way the evening will work:

  • On Wednesday afternoon, I will send a Special Broadcast for Back to School Night which will give you the Google Meet Links for each teacher.

  • I will also send you the period by period schedule with times for you to enter the virtual classroom for your meeting with your child's teacher.

  • I will record a welcome for all of you that you can view at your leisure.

  • The Media Center Specialist, Mrs. Soult, will be available the entire evening to answer any questions that you may have.

  • The PTA will have a presentation that will also be linked to the document that I strongly urge everyone to watch. The PTA is a vital part of DHS and their support is very much appreciated!

Quarantining for the 2021-22 School Year

  • The only students who will need to quarantine are students who are unvaccinated and have been within 6 feet of a Covid-19 Positive student for 15 minutes or more provided all parties are correctly wearing masks.

  • This may happen during lunch, Physical Education class, or interscholastic sports.

  • If your child needs to quarantine, they will have the opportunity to join a Google Meet.

  • The only students who will be eligible for Google Meet Live Stream Instruction will be students who are COVID-19 positive or those who are in quarantine due to exposure mandated by the district or Board of Health.

  • If your child is told to quarantine before 12:00, they will be able to join a Google Meet the following day.

  • If your child is told to quarantine after 12:00, they will be able to join a Google Meet the following day as we need to prepare teachers for this process.

  • The Google Meet will be different from last year as your child will be able to see and hear the class; however, there will be less interaction with the teacher. If your child has any questions, we will ask him/her/them to reach out to the teacher through Canvas and the teacher will set up a time to meet with your child.

  • If your child is in quarantine, attendance in the Google Meet is MANDATORY! Attendance will be taken and if your child is not in the meet, he/she/they will be marked as absent. If your child is Covid-19 Positive and too ill to attend classes, this will be excused through Mrs. Bowman in the Nurse's Office.

  • No other child will be eligible to attend a Google Meet. If your child is home sick and his/her/their class happens to be on a Google Meet and your child attends, he/she/they will still be marked absent.

Student Passwords Have Changed

Each student in the Delran Township Schools has had their password change! New passwords are contained in the letter that will be sent out on Monday! Please make sure that your child is aware of this change.

Start Strong Assessments

On September 20-22nd, Delran High School will be taking brief standardized tests known as the NJ Start Strong. There is a presentation attached which describes the tests. In simple terms, the test allows schools to determine if the curriculum is aligned to the standards. The Start Strong Assessment may also provide your student some feedback regarding strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, the tests qualify the schools mandated requirements for state assessment which was canceled during last year's school year. Getting data on our curriculum, students, and teachers, is an integral part of continuing to strive for excellence. The tests are brief totaling one hour or less for each area.

HERE is a presentation from the NJDOE about the assessments!

Yearbook Information

Our Yearbook advisors have developed a Senior Packet to guide you and your child through the Yearbook process. It lists all due dates, websites, and contact information for everyone involved!

HERE is the document. HERE is the document translated into Portuguese. HERE is the Turkish version. Any questions should be directed to Austin Martinez and Justine Carey.

Summer Reading and Assignments

Every student who will be in school in September has a summer assignment! Each student will take part in the Delran Reads! program. More information is below. If your child is taking a Mathematics course, they will also have that assignment which will be due during the first couple of days of school. Most AP Courses also have work to be completed. HERE is a listing of all Summer Assignments! DO NOT wait until the first week of September to begin them!

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me at or (856) 461-6100 x3005.

Class of 2025

DHS welcomed Freshmen to the building on Aug. 25th for orientation. PTA gifted students with a t-shirt, students also participated in a Scavenger Hunt before being treated to a Pizza lunch. Thank you to all the Peer Leaders who assisted in welcoming the class of 2025 to DHS.

Class of 2022

Parents of Seniors can expect to receive an email in the upcoming weeks requesting to complete a form. This form will be asking how you would like your child’s name printed on their diploma. It is strongly suggested to use their legal name as printed on the birth certificate. Nicknames are not appropriate for this document.

Parking Permits

Seniors may begin purchasing parking permits the week of August 16th. We are moving away from FamilyID and thus, we will be going back to a paper permit process. Students must present the following before a hangtag will be assigned:

Parking Permits will become available to Junior students beginning October 1st. Any automobile without a valid hangtag will be given a warning. If warnings are not heeded, the car may be towed away at the owner’s expense.

PTA Membership

The PTA is an organization dedicated to the education, health, safety, and well-being of all children. Membership is open to everyone. A portion of your membership fee goes to the State and National PTA to provide educational flyers and information on current health and safety topics.
