Principal's Letter
Dear LWE Families,
It finally feels like Fall, and I am loving it!! I hope you and your family were able to get outdoors over the weekend and soak in the cooler (more bearable) temperatures!
What an amazing Blue Ribbon celebration we had on October 12th! The students and staff of LWE were perfect hosts to our district leaders and Mayor Bodker of Johns Creek. Our celebration assembly was full of singing, student and guest speakers, as well as a celebration dance for all! We ended our day taking a whole school picture on the field then having a popsicle party! I was SO PROUD of our students and their perfect behavior and manners on this day. They were such an attentive and engaged audience! I'd like to thank our Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts who participated in our flag presentation. I also want to say how proud I am of our four student speakers: Aayush Ahuja, Zoe Reznik, Taylor Durko and Riley Wade. They spoke about our school in such insightful and thoughtful ways! Not to mention, they were so brave to speak in front of over 800 audience members! In addition, our fourth and fifth grade chorus sang two songs beautifully under the direction of Mrs. Allison Kummerfeldt, our music teacher. It was a marvelous day that I will not soon forget!
I would also like to thank our PTO for spoiling our staff with warm cookies from Tiff's Treats and a drink cart with coffee and sodas for teachers to enjoy in celebration of this outstanding achievement! In addition, the PTO had the fabulous "Congrats LWE" sign put in front of our school for the day of our celebration.
On Friday night, we had such a fun time at the Gladiator's hockey game supporting our LWE chorus! Our school sold over 500 tickets for this game which is the most ever sold by a school singing at any Gladiators Hockey game! I so appreciate all of our families who support our chorus students and school. Their singing of the National Anthem sounded beautiful, and it was so much fun to see so many LWE students and parents!! What a great ending to the school week!
Warm Regards,
Julie Morris

At what age can my child stay alone? Guidelines about supervision
Each year, the school is asked this question. Below are the guidelines provided by Child Protective Services for the amount of time and ages children may be left unsupervised or supervised by a child under 18 years old.
Children eight (8) years and under should never be left alone.
Children between the ages of nine (9) and twelve (12) may be left alone for brief periods of time (less than two (2) hours) when the child is determined to be mature by the caretaker. Children between 9 and 12 years old may not supervise other children or younger siblings.
Children ages thirteen (13) and older may be left alone and may perform the role of baby-sitter as authorized by the parent/caretaker. It is advisable to limit this time to twelve (12) hours or less and only when the child is determined to be mature by the caretaker. Minor children may not be left alone overnight. It is also suggested that those children over the age of thirteen (13) caring for others should have participated in a course on baby-sitting.
Older children with special conditions or disabilities should not be left home alone.
All children should know:
The family emergency plan. (Fire escapes, 911, etc.)
How to demonstrate the emergency plan.
Where the parent’s phone numbers are for work and home, their home address, and how to give directions to emergency personnel.
Support systems in place, in case a parent cannot be reached. (Relatives or neighbors available.)
Whom to contact if there are language or cultural factors affecting the situation.
If you have any further questions, please contact Stephanie Schuette, the School Social Worker at this school.
LWE Wellness Week
Each year we do a healthy challenge for the students to participate in. This year we are doing a challenge to eat at home with your family. This challenge runs from Oct 13th - Oct 28th. The students who complete the challenge and turn in their papers will receive a chain with a token! If you misplaced your form, click below to print off your copy. http://lakewindwardpe.weebly.com/

All parents wanting to participate or visit classrooms must go through the volunteer registration process. Any person who has not gone through the training since June 2, 2018 must go through it again even if you did it last school year.
Applicants should be prepared to spend about 10—15 minutes for the training application process. In accordance with State Law, all volunteers must be current with Child Abuse Reporting Protocol Training BEFORE being allowed to volunteer in our schools.
It is very important that volunteers enter their full legal name as it appears on their government issued ID (please do not use nicknames or ‘goes by’ names on the application).
All applicants must wait 24 hours after applying for application processing and approval, before volunteering in our schools. When coming to the school to volunteer, you must bring your government issued photo ID to use when checking in at the front office.

Updated Procedure for Absence Approval in Extenuating Circumstances
Students should be present in school every day unless illness or other extenuating circumstances exist. The Georgia Board of Education lawfully excuses students for the following reasons: personal illness, death in the immediate family, religious holidays, and other educational days as pre-approved by the school principal. The principal has at his/her discretion according to Board Policy the option to approve a maximum of six (6) days per student per school year in extenuating circumstances. Parents/guardians must notify the principal of their request by completing the request form located on the school website at least two weeks prior to the absence. Submission of parental/guardian request does not grant automatic approval. A school administrator or designee will contact the parents/guardian upon the final decision. As in the past, absences for illness, death in the family or religious holidays can be approved by your child's teacher by sending in a signed note from you.
- The principal approval form is to be used for extenuating circumstances only, as stated in the information above.
- Two weeks ahead of the planned absence, print and complete the request form located on the Lake Windward website.
- One form is required per student.
- Submit the completed, signed, and dated form to the Lake Windward front office.
- Your student’s attendance record will be taken into consideration when reviewing your request.
- A copy of the decision to accept, decline or amend your request, will be sent to you and your child’s homeroom teacher.
Email requests will not be accepted.
