Class Placement for 2023-2024 School Year
The Spring brings a time where we look ahead and begin future planning. Our students are beginning to think about the curriculum, experiences, and adventures that lie ahead in the next grade level. As a school team, careful consideration is given each year to the placement of all students at Hemenway Elementary. Parents play an important role in this process and recognize the insights that families share that help us to know each child. The ways you observe your child's adaptation to a variety of settings can provide school staff with a broader, more comprehensive view of your child's strengths and areas for growth.
Central to our mission is to ensure that Hemenway and each individual class presents a space where every child can learn, grow, and thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. Therefore, our school team strives to assign students to a class in a way that represents a microcosm of Hemenway. We consider the wide range of variables that include:
- parental input
- balance the physical, academic, social, and emotional strengths and areas of growth for each student
- address instructional groupings within each class
- consider the effects that individuals have on one another in order to provide an optimal learning environment for the entire cohort
- maintain an equitable teacher-pupil ratio
We welcome information from you in making placement decisions for the upcoming school year. This year, we will be using a digital form to organize input and streamline the process. We do ask that this is the method for providing your input, please refrain from sending emails to teachers with your requests as this will be the only method used to provide input. This will also ensure that we do not misplace any requests. Finally, as you provide insight into placement for the upcoming year, we remind you not to request specific teachers by name as these requests will not be honored. Teachers have been directed not to discuss placement with individual families. The reason for this, it places inappropriate expectations on a teacher, places them in an uncomfortable position with their colleagues, and compromises the fairness of the placement process.
The deadline for submitting input is Monday, May 8th, 2023. The form for requests is linked below.
In partnership,
Marybeth O'Brien and Kelly Napierski
