Smart

To be an American as a pioneer during the Westward Expansion they had to be smart. Pioneers had to be smart so they could survive their journeys. Being smart during the Westward Expansion was very important because they needed to know how to get supplies for journeys, care for their parties and protect everything. Also they needed to know how to treat sickness' so they didn't die. Many pioneers had limited survival supplies for example the Donner Party, they had limited supplies and ran out of food to keep everyone alive."RIght now all we can afford to think about is making it through the first winter." They had to prepare themselves for the winter and be ready. All pioneers had to be smart to get ready for whatever kind of weather was coming.

Brave

Next, to be an American as a pioneer during the Westward Expansion they had to be not only smart but very brave too. It was very important to be smart during the Westward Expansion because if something bad were to occur then they needed to be the brave one and help everyone and everything. There were many things that happened when on their journeys that they needed to be brave for. " The rain continues all day.all wet. the rain [etc.] which has continued without a longer intermission than 2 hours at a time for ten days past has destroyed the robes and rotted nearly one half of the few clothes the party has particularly the leather clothes fortunately for us we have no very cold weather as yet." According to Pacific Ocean Bound journal entry by Clark. This journal entry explains that they had to be brave for whatever was going to happen next with weather or other people.
