Creative Writing News
Venecia Fultz has been chosen to attend the prestigious New England Young Writers’ Conference at Bread Loaf, the oldest writers’ conference in the country. The event, which runs May 16-19th 2019 at Middlebury College in Vermont, gathers the best young writers from New England and New York to offer them a chance to learn with renowned fiction writers, essayists, poets, playwrights, song lyricists, professors and fellow high school students. Each year, admission is highly competitive and dependent on the applicants’ writing abilities.
Venecia was also selected as a semi-finalist in the 13th Annual High School Poetry Prize competition, sponsored by the Poetry Center at Smith College for sophomore and junior girls in New England and New York.
The Poetry Center at Smith College was founded in 1998 with the goals of bringing distinguished poets to the college, creating a video archive of their readings, and promoting an appreciation of poetry in the larger community through outreach to schools. The Poetry Center celebrates Smith's long and illustrious relationship with such world-renowned poets as Sylvia Plath, W.H. Auden, Richard Wilbur, and Adrienne Rich.

March Artist of the Month
Name: Emily Simmons
Bio: I am 17 years old and am a Senior here at Rockville High
School. I was born in Hartford, and lived in East Hartford for a
couple months of my life. I attended Center Road School for
elementary, and Vernon Center Middle School. In the Fall I will
be attending Curry College and my major is going to be nursing.
Artist Statement: I have always been fond of photography and
started to pursue photography before I started classes in High
School. I tend to not have a main subject for my photos all the
time. I enjoy photographing landscapes, but in a unique way.
When I photograph I try and do new angles and new techniques
that I haven't done before. Now being in AP Photo I tend to take
risks a lot more which is a risky but fun thing to do.
Fun Fact: I tend to go to more concerts than my brain can handle
Favorite Artist Quote: Photographs open doors into the past, but
they also allow a look into the future; - Sally Mann

Cafeteria News
Rockville High School featured a Kale, Yeah! salad on their menu last month made with locally- grown baby kale, cranberries, and a sweet balsamic dressing.
Ever wonder where your food comes from? We can tell you! Shinsen Max is a new indoor farm in South Windsor. The farm grows zero-pesticide fresh produce year round using controlled environment technology. The farmers planted 1,000 plugs of kale for Vernon Public Schools and grew it indoors. The kale was harvested, delivered to the schools, and served on the same day. Now that’s fresh!
Kale is packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber to keep kids healthy and full throughout their
day. If kale is a bit too bitter for your taste, try adding something sweet like cranberries or a
sweet dressing.
