Wash Your Hands OFTEN!
Dear Ahtolton Families,
As you may be aware, Governor Hogan announced this past week that three cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) have been confirmed in Maryland and two more this weekend. All cases are located in Montgomery County and Harford County and are contained.
Our Superintendent, Dr. Martirano, has been in contact with Howard County Health Officer Dr. Maura Rossman, who has been in contact with officials at the state level. Dr. Rossman shared that proper precautions and procedures were followed in the cases in Montgomery County, minimizing risk to fellow Maryland residents. She also shared that the best thing each of us can do is continue to monitor our health and practice the following enhanced precautions as recommended by the Howard County Health Department and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:
Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
Avoid close contact with people who are sick
Stay home when you are sick
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash (or cough/sneeze into your sleeve or elbow)
Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces
As stated by Governor Hogan, Maryland residents should continue to go to work and children to school. HCPSS schools and scheduled activities will continue until a change is deemed necessary by local and state health professionals.
I have made sure that our custodians are monitoring our bathrooms to make sure that they remain stocked with soap, water and paper towels so students can wash their hands, in addition to the hand sanitizer station located in our cafeteria. Additionally, students are permitted to bring their own hand sanitizer to school.
I will continue to provide regular updates to our community. The HCPSS website is the best source of information related to the school system’s response to the COVID–19 threat with details, resources and answers to frequently asked questions.
On a lighter note, this past week was all about basketball playoffs! Our Lady Raiders fought hard in a loss to the number one seed River Hill. The boys are playing the role of spoiler in upsetting number two seed Oakland Mills on Tuesday night and then number one seed Reservoir (in overtime) on Thursday to capture the 3A East Regional Title. You can read about this exciting game here. Then on Saturday, the boys traveled to Bel Air, MD to face C. Milton Wright and left victorious and a place in the MD State semifinals to be held at the University of Maryland’s Xfinity Center! Read about it here. They will play this coming Thursday, March 12 at 5pm against St. Charles. We are organizing a fan bus to leave from school (thank you Athletic Boosters!), a coordinated t-shirt sale, and of course, our pep band. Please come out to support Raider Nation!
Hope to see you at UMCP this Thursday!
Have a great week!
Warmly,
Robert A. Motley
Principal
