Special Events - More Details
October 31, 2022
On Monday, October 31, 2022, we will offer the opportunity to our students to dress up for Halloween and parade around our building! More information to come as the committee finalizes it.
Several guidelines to follow when costume decisions are being made:
- Students must dress in attire that does not include blood, weapons or swords of any nature. Those items should be kept at home.
- Children should wear comfortable and safe shoes.
- Masks/face coverings need to have clear areas for eyes and breathing.
- Please keep costumes as simple as possible so students have more time to enjoy the activities rather than spend all of their time getting into and out of the costume.
- Costumes must be able to go over top of the clothing that the children wear to school.
Our tentative brief parade (weather permitting) will be scheduled for 9:45am, and students will parade along the sidewalk in front of the school, exiting from Door 9. They will walk the sidewalk all along the front of the school and follow it around back to the blacktop area. They will make a loop and then enter Door 8 (the playground door) to return to their rooms.
9:25-9:45 change for parade - staff will support the changing in K-2
9:45-10:30 Halloween Parade: The parade would be held outside with family (weather
permitting) and the route would consist of exiting through the doors in the 3/4 wing. 4th would lead, followed by 3, 2, 1, K. Family will line the grass/blacktop beside the sidewalk and students will walk the entirety of the sidewalk and wrap around the back of the building and enter through the recess doors. Family members will be able to line the parking lot and grass beside the sidewalk and the perimeter of the blacktop out back.
Parking is our biggest concern. Last year families made it work, so let's hope it goes as well this year!
For drop off, please arrive between 7:20am-7:40am
When families arrive too early, it creates difficulties for truck deliveries and district staff trying to access the parking areas.
Please do not try to pull around cars on the left side, because children exit the vehicle on the driver's side in the morning.
If you arrive after 7:40, please walk your child to the main door. We do not have staff outside after 7:40.
Please be patient and safe.
We ask families to wait in a single line for drop off in the morning.
In the afternoon we ask families to follow the lead from our staff about where to line up and when to move ahead.
Please be patient and do not rush to get around other cars at any time.
We only use King Street to enter and exit the schools. We do not use Armory Drive, that's only for buses.
Please arrive after 2:20pm and before 2:40pm.
When families arrive too early, it creates a line of traffic that backs up onto Rt. 664.
It also prevents deliveries and trash disposal from being able to complete their scheduled runs.
We will add an article in the November newsletter with more details.
Notes From the Principal - October, 2022
Our school earned another first place prize for the 2022 Homecoming Parade in Lock Haven featuring the "Mouse Trap" float! This picture was taken before the parade started, and it represents true family engagement! Everyone worked together to support the school in whatever way they could, and no matter how you look at it, that makes for a winning combination when it comes to children! Congratulations, Woodward Elementary!
Note: There are additional informational items that I will be adding as soon as I receive them. Please check this newsletter at least weekly to stay in the know!

Our Woodward Student Ambassadors take on many roles throughout the school. They are learning leaders, and they help younger students and grade level peers with various tasks throughout the day. In addition to being good role models and helpers, they also help to make school decisions. It takes a great deal of hard work and commitment to become a Student Ambassador, and we ask students, family members and faculty/staff to join the students as they make their decisions to take on this leadership role. Please read the Commitment Agreement and talk to your child about the decision to become a 3rd or 4th grade Student Ambassador before signing up. Right now sign ups are closed. We will reopen them at a later date.
Monthly Principal Forum and PTO Meeting
Mrs. Murty is hosting the monthly Principal Forum to give families a time to meet via Zoom to ask questions, voice concerns or just touch base. We will meet from 6:00-6:30pm on our Zoom link (below) and then we will open the Zoom link for the PTO meeting to start at 6:30pm
PTO meetings are usually the 3rd Thursday of the month. May 2023 will be the officer voting meeting for the 2023-2024 school year. We always need willing volunteers, and we are starting to grow as new families join us! Start with us and September, then see if you might be willing to serve as an officer in our PTO - you get a lot of perks - mostly an open invitation to come in to help with PTO activities in the school!
Ralonda Murty is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Halloween Safety Tips
Plan a Route: We know that children have a keen sense for curiosity and adventure. Plan your route together, in a familiar neighborhood, and identify places they are allowed and are not allowed to go. You could even make a map they could bring with them as they trick or treat.
Choose Safe Costumes: Trick or treating often occurs in the evening as night begins to settle. Choosing costumes that are light colors and that allow the face to be clearly seen will keep your child safe. Choosing a costume that allows them to move freely may avoid tripping or falling.
Check Candy: Remind children that some candies may be a choking hazard or trigger an allergy. Encourage them to wait until they are home or until a trusted adult checks the candy before they consume anything.
Safety in Numbers: Families may have more fun when they travel with friends. If your children are old enough, encourage them to travel in groups rather than alone.
- Be Visible: Reflector stickers, flashlights, glow sticks, and glow jewelry help your child to be seen at night! Let the kids pick their glow items or carry the flashlights to make the evening even more fun!

Arrival and Dismissal Topics for Families
As we enter the second full month of school for the 2022-2023 school year, we want to take a moment to thank you for making our arrival and dismissal routine go so smoothly! Our students are very comfortable with the routines, and our goal is to work with families to help students become more and more independent. Please remember to stay in the vehicle at drop off and pick up to keep the line moving. Little fingers and hands are getting stronger and more capable of buckling themselves into car seats, and this greatly benefits the process. Adults can check, but building that independence is a huge goal!
Please remember that we do not have permission for cars/family vehicles to use Armory Drive. Only buses may use that entrance. All family vehicles visiting Woodward at any time must use King Street. We don't want our Armory neighbors to feel that we aren't honoring the no trespassing signs.
SAFETY FIRST:
Please share our routine with family members who do the drop off and pick up. Recently we have had new visitors through the morning drop off line, and they do not understand that they must wait in the line and not pass on the left to get around those who take a little longer. We have children who get out on the driver's side before we can get there, and passing cars in the morning on the left side can lead to a dangerous outcome. Thank you for your help!

Counseling Connection
School Counseling
During upper elementary school, students experience changes, such as transitioning into adolescence, balancing more challenging classes/assignments, dealing with peer pressure, developing new friendships, caring about what others think/fitting in and/or personal situations. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) may contact our school counselor with any questions or concerns they may have regarding their student's academic, career, behavior and/or social-emotional well-being.
A counselor is someone to talk to, who will listen without judgment. A school counselor can assist in short-term counseling and if needed arrange long-term counseling and the SAP (Student Assistance Program) and Tier II support. Counselors can teach students tools to improve and cope with different situations, especially because sometimes it's hard to figure out where to start. Students may be want to see a counselor for the following reasons:
- Want to share an experience/feelings
- Feel depressed and/or lonely
- Have thoughts of self-harm
- Feel stressed and/or anxious
- Feel angry and/or frustrated
- Want to improve grade(s)
- Talk about college/careers
- Relationship/peer issues/conflicts
- Personal issues (divorce/separation, loss of a loved one, etc.)
To learn more or to schedule a meeting, please contact your student's school counselor.
