Roosevelt Wildcat Weekly

October 29, 2021 Information for our Families

Greetings Wildcat Families,

This week has been very productive and busy! We celebrated making healthy life choices with national Red Ribbon Week. Our counselors and ASB students organized events during lunch and Spirit Week! A couple of highlights included a costume contest, a door decorating contest, and games.

This week marked the end of the first grading period. Please stay informed of your student’s progress through AERIES/Parent Portal. Remember that one support we offer all students is our after school tutoring program, BLAST. The flier with specific information is below. Conferences are coming up 11/17/21 and 11/18/21. It is imperative that students attend since we will be continuing our Student Led Conferences. This conference style allows students to take an active role in their education.

Next week, Tuesday through Thursday (11/2/21, 11/3/21, 11/4/21), RMS will be holding Boy’s Basketball Tryouts in the MPR from 3:15-5:00pm.

Finally, VUSD offers parent workshops in Spanish hosted by Dr. Beatriz Villareal. These workshops are on Wednesdays beginning November 3rd through January 12th via Zoom. The flier with specifics is linked HERE.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Go, Wildcats!

Classified - Roosevelt Middle School Campus Assistants

Roosevelt Middle School Wildcats are Beyond Fortunate with Rockstar Campus Assistants!

Safety is a primary focus here at Roosevelt Middle School. Jim Horst, Marisol Lotempio, and Tavia Pizza excel in their responsibilities as our Wildcat Campus Assistants making it possible for our staff and students to feel safe. To keep the school day flowing smoothly, their visibility throughout our entire campus before school, in between classes, during lunch periods, and after school helps students and staff feel secure. They are approachable, trusted, flexible, and vigilant when it comes to serving VUSD students in the best way. Thank you from the bottom of our Roosevelt Wildcat hearts Team Awesome!

Independent Study Contracts Needed To Continue Learning During to Quarantine

The Vista Unified School District is committed to providing ongoing opportunities for students to continue their education and earn attendance credit while on quarantine. Currently, the state only allows districts to provide these opportunities through independent study, and parents/guardians must agree for their students to voluntarily participate. We need your help to sign a short-term independent study contract so that our schools can get the funding they need to maintain services for all students.

Currently, students on quarantine are marked with excused absences, but once parents/guardians approve for their student to participate in independent study during quarantine, the student will begin to generate positive attendance. Students enrolled in this short term independent study during periods of quarantine will have access to classroom content through Canvas, the district learning management system. Students can complete classroom assignments to stay current with the classroom learning and earn attendance credit. Keep in mind that when a student is marked absent, the school loses funding for that student for as long as they are absent.

Please, check your email from VUSD sent on September 24th for the personalized link. If you cannot find the email with the personalized link, please follow this link VUSD Independent Study Online Form to complete the form.

Health and Safety Update

As a school community, we need your help to ensure that we can safely keep students in school and minimize the number of quarantines we might need. If there is a family that is waiting on the results of COVID tests, please keep your student home until the results come in. If your student is not feeling well, please don't send them to school.

We will include a Health and Safety Update in each RMS Wildcat Weekly and we will notify you in this update if there have been any positive cases on campus. This week, we had 0 positive case on campus. If you would like to check for a notification on a daily basis, please refer to the VUSD COVID-19 Case Dashboard. The Dashboard is updated by 7:00 pm daily.

A few other reminders about protocols:

  • If there is a student or adult who was a “Close Contact” of a person who is identified as Covid+ then we will send a notice to families in those classes about being exposed to a person who is a close contact of a Covid+ person.

  • If there is an active case of Covid, on campus, and your student was identified as being a Close Contact (defined as within 6' proximity for a cumulative 15 minutes in 24 hours) then you will be notified and your child will be Quarantined. The exception is if your child has been fully vaccinated (defined as 2 weeks post-final vaccination). Proof must be provided in this case.

  • If your child is quarantined, then they will receive support/connection with a VUSD Learning Support Teacher, via Zoom and email.

  • If your child is quarantined, they are to follow along in Canvas for their coursework.

  • If your child is fully vaccinated, they are NOT required to Quarantine at this time.

In the August 24th VUSD Community Update, Dr. Doyle included a very important Health and Safety Call to Action for Parents:

  • Action #1: Notify your school immediately if your child or any member of your household becomes ill with COVID-19.

  • Action #2: Keep your child home from school if they have ANY of the symptoms listed on the decision tree guidelines (fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea).

  • Action #3: Keep your child home from school if they have been exposed to someone who has tested positive. They should NOT return to in-person learning until given a return date by our nursing staff. This includes exposure to someone living in the home who is positive.

  • Action #4: Do not send your child back to school if the child or anyone in the household is awaiting a COVID-19 test result. Only send your child back if they have a negative test result or if they have completed the entire quarantine period.

  • Action #5: Have your child vaccinated if they are 12 to 17 years old. Remember, your child will not need to be quarantined if they come in close contact at school if they are fully vaccinated and asymptomatic. The vaccination will keep them in school and able to participate in all of the extracurricular activities like athletics, band, dance, ASB, etc.

If we can proactively respond to these five calls to action, then we can dramatically reduce the impact of quarantine on all students.
