WEEKLY NEWS HIGHLIGHTING OUR STUDENTS & STAFF
OJH sculpture project no longer hung up
Todd Edwards with Lloyd's Cleaners in Ozark stopped by the Ozark Junior High School art department Aug. 20 with a box of 400 hangers. Teacher Laura Swearngin collects metal hangers each year so students can make sculptures by shaping the metal and covering it with pantyhose. Typically it takes her months to collect enough hangers for the project, but thanks to Edwards and School Board President Shane Nelson, who reached out to Edwards for the donation, students can start the project early this year.
"Students will do an artist study where they choose an artist to inspire their work," Swearngin said. "The sculptures are just always so much fun because students have so much freedom with it."
Engineering ingenuity
Someone has predicted a zombie apocalypse. These Junior High students work for an engineering firm hired to build rescue towers able to hold helicopters. They need to build the tallest tower (a lot of stairs for zombies to climb) that will withstand the weight of the helicopter (3 large marshmallows).
Students are using the engineering design process to build the tallest tower with a landing pad to hold 3 large marshmallows.

From the Office of the President
It's not every day you receive a letter with the return address from the White House. But this week, senior Ethan Gohl did.
The letter was in response to an argumentative essay Ethan wrote last year in Honors American Literature about the censorship of books. He sent it to President Trump as his authentic audience member.
President Trump responded with the following:
"I appreciate you taking the time to write and share your suggestions with me. Mrs. Trump and I are inspired by young people like you, who are paying close attention to issues facing our Nation and are trying to find solutions to our most critical challenges. As your President, I want you to know that I am listening and will always work hard for you.
I encourage you to do your best in school each day and never stop learning. You are the future of our great Nation, and together we will determine the course of America and the world for many years to come."

Ethology lessons
Mr. McClain's Ethology class is off to a great start. Students are learning about animal behavior and participated in a field study observing how animals on the school grounds interact with living and non-living parts of the environment. Later, students analyzed why and how the animals behaved the way they did.
Practices are 6-7 p.m. Mondays and Thursday each week at the Junior High front yard. The event is Sept. 9 in Springfield.
Start & Release Times
Tuesday Sept. 4 will be an A Day for students in 6-12th grade.
There's an app for that!
