Let's Talk about Talking!
There are lots of ways that sound emits from our mouths! We all talk. And many of us LOVE TO TALK. Humans are social beings. The impulse to talk is normal. Talking is an important component in helping us learn.
Except for when it's not.
There are many times in our school day that talking is fine. Talking is just dandy before school, passing time, lunch, and during certain segments of class periods. But that doesn't mean that a person has the right to talk at any time he or she chooses. During the minute of silence, class assessments, direct instruction, presentations, safety drills, and during individual work time, talking is not ok. Talking without permission during these times can signal many things: disrespect, cheating, unwillingness to persevere on a task, and disregard for the concentration of others, etc.
Thank you for adhering to staff direction about talking. To help all staff and students, let's use this language for clarity about talking between now and spring break. Let's see if this helps us!
- Level 0 = No talking. None. Never. Nada.
- Level 1 = Talking to one person. Like a whisper. No one else should hear you.
- Level 2 = Talking to a small group. Loud enough for 2 or more at a table to hear you.
- Level 3 = Talking so the entire room hears you.
Talking levels will likely change during a class period as tasks change. Hopefully this plan will help all of us better communicate about oral communication!
Career Fair on Friday!
We are very excited to be partnering with Austin Middle School and Mid America Science Park to host our first ever 8th grade career fair. The career fair will be Friday, March 8th from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
Our 8th grade students will take a tour of Mid America Science Park and visit career booths in the banquet hall. Students will be given a card to have the adults representing the different career pathways to sign. At the end of the career fair, 8th graders can turn in their completed card to be entered to win one of the prizes pictured. We would like to thank the Scott County Economic Development group for donating $500 to purchase the prizes.
We would also like to thank the following agencies that will be representing different career pathways and teaching our students about their career field: (Engineering)- Purdue University and Prosser Career Education Center; (Criminal Justice)- Scott County Sheriff's Department, Austin Police Department, Scottsburg Police Department; (Law)- Scott County Prosecutor; (Agriculture)- Purdue Extension Office Scott County; (Construction)- Koetter Construction Inc.; (Graphic Design)- Fewell Monument Company; (Networking/Information Technology)- Five Star Technology; (Visual Arts)- Heacock Eastside Gallery; (Cosmetology)- Christy Bixler; (Health Sciences)- Scott Memorial Hospital; (Small Business Development)- Jon Myers; (Education)- Scott County School District #2; (Human and Social Services)- Scott County CASA program, Scott County Department of Child Services, Centerstone; (Transportation)- Riverton Trucking; Hospitality/Tourism - Cliffty Falls State Park; Aviation- Lift Academy; (Fire/Emergency Medical Technician)- Scottsburg Fire Department. Indiana University Southeast, Ivy Tech Community College, 21 Century Scholars, and Work One will also have booths at the career fair. A special thanks is in order to John Dattilo for helping plan this event.
Students: please be thinking about what booths you would like to visit first. This is your opportunity to talk to people actively working in the career field. Some appropriate questions could be: What sort of training or education is necessary for this career field? What do you like best about your career and job? Are there things you do not like or that are tough to deal with in your field? What advice would you give someone interested in your career field? What is a typical day like for you? How can I find out more about this career field?
Got Talent?
Attention all talented performers! Have you been waiting for an opportunity to showcase your talents? Have you trained your pet cockroach to perform an obstacle course? Do you just wanna dance, dance, dance? Are you training to be the next Houdini?
If you have a talent, we’d love to see it! The annual Scottsburg Middle School Talent and Art Show is quickly approaching. We will be holding auditions for the talent portion of the show next week on Monday, March 11 and Tuesday March 12. You only need to attend ONE day of auditions. We will be meeting in the Great Room after school until 4:15.
Please take a moment to sign up first on the SMS Canvas Community page and let us know your talent, any music you may need from us and the day you plan to attend auditions. The Talent and Art Show will be held in the Great Room on Friday, April 5 at 6pm. You will need to be available on Thursday, April 4 for mandatory dress rehearsal and on the night of the show.
If you wish to participate in the Art portion of the show, Mr. Heacock will have more information shortly. We can’t wait to see you shine!
