Language Arts
In writer's workshop we are continuing with opinion writing. In this unit students will learn to using persuasive writing to the classroom, school, and world a better place. They will be writing to try to convince others to think/agree with their thinking. We have learned to tell how we can solve a problem we see and give reasons why the problem needs solved. (I think the hallways could be better if everyone walked. It is dangerous to run because you could crash into another person.) We are beginning to learn about the different ways to express our opinions to others like using a poster, writing a letter, or even writing a song!
Students will continue to focus on the mechanics of writing by...
- writing in complete sentences
- beginning our sentences with a capital letter
- putting spaces between our words
- using appropriate punctuation
- spelling sight words correctly
- sounding out other words
Guided Reading Groups are continuing to happen each and every day! Depending on the group that your child is in, some of the skills we have been working on are CVC words, CVCe words, 2 vowels, blends, digraphs and contraction words. Please be sure to have your child practice their little books nightly. The end of the year benchmark for kindergarten reading level is a level D/E for meeting expectations. You can help your child by reading daily and practicing sight words. Students need to not only read the words with 90% accuracy but they also need to be able to discuss what they read and answer questions about the text they read.
In comprehension we are reading non-fiction books and identifying the main idea and key details. The students are using the photographs and the context clues to figure out the meaning of unknown words in the text. We have also learned about the bold print words in a non-fiction text and where to find what those important words mean, the glossary.
Our summer reading kick off depends on the donations of books from our community and beyond. Please help spread the word! Please see attached flyer.
