April 29, 2015 - Issue 33

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

It is almost time to sign-up for the Summer Reading Program through the Mountain View Public Library! Check out the link below for details. This year the mobile library will come to Castro at two different times during summer to make it even more convenient to exchange books. Breaks are a wonderful time to encourage children to be adventurous in their reading such as trying a new series, a higher level, or reading about a new and interesting topic.

Best Regards,

~Theresa Lambert, Principal

~Marcela Simões de Carvalho, Asst. Principal

State Testing Grades 3-5

PLEASE remember to be sure that your child is well-rested and eats a nutritious breakfast each morning during these three weeks of testing. Even more important are your encouraging words every day! There are ten testing days throughout these three weeks, however those 10 days may vary depending on circumstances. It is very important that you do not come to sign your child out of school before eleven a.m. during these three weeks.

Castro Site Planning Council Update (CSPC)

School Naming:

The School Naming Survey results will be reviewed at the April 29th meeting. Recommendations will go to the Board on May 7th for review and discussion. There is a public hearing on May 21st before the Board makes a final decision.

School Design:
A conceptual draft of the architect plans for the site layout will be displayed in the office and on the Castro website beginning Friday, May 1st. Please stop in to leave your comments or questions. On May 6th the architect will be meeting again with the CSPC and then There will be an All Parent meeting on Monday, May 11th to view the further updated plans

School Mascots and Colors

As part of the new identities and fresh start for each school, after the Board makes a final decision on the school names we will begin a process with the students to choose new mascots and new school colors.

Lost & Found Items

We have many items in the Lost and Found that are going to be given away. Please look in the Lost & Found for any items that may be yours. You have until the end of the month to claim the item/s.

Castro Student Council - Guatemala Spanish Book Drive - Ends April 30th

Have your kids outgrown some of their books? Rather than Goodwill, why not donate them to kids in Guatemala who don't have access to books otherwise? The student council has organized a book drive for a school in Vuelta Grande, Guatemala. All around Castro over the next few weeks, you will see boxes where you can place the books. Please only donate books in Spanish. Thank you so much for your consideration!

MVEF Endowment Campaign Participating in SVGives on May 5

With the success of last month’s gala, MVEF is nearing our 2014-15 fundraising goal of $600,000. The money raised supports programs at all District schools, such as art and music classes, hands-on science, garden programs, recess programs, and leadership workshops at the elementary schools; and after-school sports and extended-day electives at the middle schools. If you have not yet donated this school year, please give today: www.mvef.org.

While the main focus for MVEF is on raising money for current year programs, the MVEF Endowment will support programs in the Mountain View Whisman school district for generations to come. We are in the third year of our 5 years to $500K endowment campaign. You’re invited to support the MVEF Endowment during Silicon Valley Gives.

SVGives, an online community-wide giving day, is happening on Tuesday, May 5. MVEF is one of nearly 600 nonprofits taking part, along with many corporations and foundations. Please consider a donation to the MVEF Endowment on May 5 -- Learn more at www.mvef.org or svgives.org.
