Husky Highlight
December 9, 2019
Note from Ms. Moulton
Over the coming weeks (and those following the break), we will be "Lighting Up the Hosmer School with Kindness and Gratitude"! Each day, students will learn about holiday traditions around the world that involve celebrations of light. So far, we will be learning about the following traditions:
- Diwali (India)
- Loy Krathong (Thailand)
- Hannukah (Israel)
- Luciadagen (Sweden)
- Yule
- Christmas (United States)
- Las Posadas (Mexico)
- Kwanzaa (United States)
New Year's Eve (Brazil)
- Chinese New Year (China)
- Candlemas (Luxembourg
- Buddha's Birthday (Korea)
- Ramadan (Sierra Leone)
- Bon Matsuri (Japan)
(We are indicating a specific country for each but are aware that many of these holidays are celebrated in more than one place.)
If your family celebrates a holiday/tradition that is associated with light that is NOT listed here, please let us know in the office so we can learn about it. We know there are more!
In addition to this learning, we are also intentionally honoring "bright lights" of kindness and gratitude in our school. Images of LIght are included in a link below this note. Feel free to print and color these with your child. Around the image, write a kind act that you are grateful for doing, receiving or witnessing over this holiday season. Please send these to school for our display!
Have a wonderful week!

Library Volunteers Needed!
We need volunteers as we will be reorganizing the furniture in the library over the December break. Please contact the office if you are able to help.
What Did the Husky See?
Hello Hosmer Huskies!
I had so much fun visiting Mrs. Fletcher’s 3rd grade class. I learned about taking notes and making summaries for nonfiction texts and the students shared their books with me.
In math class, the students shared with me how many math facts they already learned. What a surprise! Due to the commutative property, they discovered they know way more facts than they thought. For example, they learned 3 x 6 which means they also know 6 x 3! They just have a few new facts to be introduced to. Then they also taught me how a letter can be put in the place of an unknown factor. I was learning the beginning of algebra!!!
Students showed me how they sort their word study words each week. They also write a lot here in 3rd grade! Right now they are working on developing their descriptive details.
On Friday I got to visit their buddies with them in Mrs. Bolton’s PreK class. We had a great time sharing books and a love of reading.
My favorite part of the week was when I got to be an engineer. In science students used the knowledge they gained in their unit of study on the impacts of natural hazards to construct a wall to protect a city from a flood. They used the engineering process: first making a plan, then testing and making changes based on their findings before presenting a final product to the class. Their walls had to be strong enough to hold back the flood water for a full minute. It was really exciting when we tested it out.
Well, that’s it for this week. I look forward to my next classroom adventure next week!
Goodbye 3rd grade!
Best wishes!
