The Clayville Chronicle
November 2018 Edition
From the Desk of Mrs. Francis
October was filled with many highlights! On behalf of Clayville School, I would like to recognize the unconditional dedication of our PTO members. Your ever present efforts raise funds to support Clayville School in many ways. With the support of Clayville families, the PTO covers the costs of buses for field trips, special classroom supplies, assemblies, and more. Our PTO also plans events that create meaningful and special memories for our students. To date, they have sponsored and coordinated the Back to School Bash, Bake Sale @ the Scituate Art Festival, Funny 4 Funds, Trunk or Treat, Spirit Wear Store, and Restaurant Nights. A special thanks to our PTO Board Members, Dena Linde, Amanda Rossi, Laura Bard, Tara Bergeron, and Paul Copp! The school community looks forward to a continued partnership with our supportive parent group!
November promises to be another month filled with exciting learning opportunities and reasons to be thankful. As always, I encourage you to reach out with any suggestions, questions, or concerns.
Warm Regards,
Mrs. Francis

Professional Development Day Recap
The October Professional Development Day was a great day of learning for our staff! Teachers rotated between three sessions: Google certification training, blended learning, and student achievement. Kudos to Ms. Radtke and Ms. Groves who presented on station rotation and blended learning best practices. Scituate Schools is fortunate to have such dedicated educators who are true lifelong learners.

Child Outreach Screening Schedule: Fall 2018
Child Outreach is Rhode Island’s universal screening system designed to screen all children yearly ages 3-5.
Screenings look at various developmental tasks in a wide range of areas. Screening results are often the first step in identifying children who may need further assessment, intervention, and/or support at an early age to promote positive outcomes in Kindergarten
The Fall Child Outreach schedule is as follows:
November 2, 2018 Trinity Church – 9:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.
** We also offer screenings in the towns of Burrillville, Foster, Glocester and N. Smithfield **
Please contact Julie LePain, Child Outreach Coordinator at 647-7560 or nwrcoscreen@gmail.com for more information or to schedule an appointment.
News from Northwest Special Education
We know that when parents are involved in their child's education, students achieve more in school!
The research overwhelmingly concludes that parental involvement enhances academic performance and leads to better classroom behavior. Family-school partnerships are particularly important when a child is receiving special education services. During the school year, parents of students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) are invited to participate in an annual meeting to review evaluations, assessments and a plan of action to support their child's academic and behavioral needs. As there is only a short period allotted for these meetings, we want to encourage families to be prepared to ask questions, voice concerns and contribute helpful information to make the best use of time to develop an appropriate plan.
The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) suggests the following tips to help parents prepare ahead of time to have a productive and positive IEP meeting:
1. Before the meeting, become familiar with your child's school performance, routines, classroom expectations, and instructional materials. You may consider a classroom observation or teacher meeting.
2. Compile and review your child's records (current IEP, progress reports, report cards, recent work samples, scores on district/state assessments and any communications from the school).
3. On the day of the meeting, the chair of the meeting will call the meeting to order and ask that everyone introduce themselves. Typically, parents are encouraged to share thoughts, concerns, priorities and praises at the beginning of the meeting. Sometimes these meetings can be emotional, but it is important to remain calm, respectful and collaborative! Everyone attending wants the best for your child.
4. While school teams come prepared with an IEP document, it is merely a draft for discussion purposes. For the IEP to be complete, the team must develop goals, services, accommodations, and modifications that will enable the child to receive a free and appropriate public education.
5. After the meeting, monitor your child's progress and stay in touch with the teacher(s) by email or with a short note. Ongoing communication will keep you informed as to what is happening in school!
