Making a difference, one person at a time
Dealing with Adversity
For those of you that don't know, I have two boys, Drew is 15 and Troy is 12. They are VERY different and to each his own.
However, as I say that they do have a couple things that are similar and drive me bonkers. Both of my boys don't regularly look for the "bright" side of things. As a parent this is frustrating to say the least. For example, there are 180 school days throughout the year. It is quite normal for most people to understand that not all 180 days will be fantastic. Yet inside each day is an opportunity. An opportunity to grow and learn.
When one of my boys arrives home and I can see something is bothering them I often try to listen first. I want to see what they have to say and what it looked or felt like from their viewpoint. The second thing I do is I remind myself that this is THEIR viewpoint and there is always multiple sides to every story. The third thing I do is ask questions. I ask them how they reacted or what led to the issue. Then comes the kicker...
My boys have heard me say over and over that attitude is everything! Sometimes I'm quite sure that I sound like a broken record, but I'm trying so hard to get them to focus on the positive, rather than dwell on the negative.
As a parent I fully understand that the emotions of our kids will feel like a roller coaster throughout the year. My aim is to feel like the one constant. I want them to see me being positive and for me to be pushing them to see the positive opportunities in all situations.
Parents, there is no playbook on parenting, but one thing is for certain...
Life is 10% of what happens to you
and
90% of how you react to it.
