Monday Minute

Big picture
AMLE is partnering with several organizations to declare March the official month to focus on students ages 10 to 15 and celebrate middle level education.

You can find ideas on AMLE's page, as well as NASSP, which has general suggestions as well as several social media ideas. (Suggestion: tag us with @IMLEA-org and add #mschat)

I like the idea of sharing your own middle school/junior high picture with the logo on the right. (available on the AMLE page) If you check out the #MLEM19 hashtag on twitter, you can find several examples; why not add your own? You could also post this in your classroom. (I was going to include mine-- did they have cameras back then?)

AMLE Offers $3000 Collaboration Grants

These grants recognize middle level teachers who have taken leadership roles in developing collaborative projects within as well as outside school. Collaboration is a key concept in the successful education of young adolescents. (i.e., collaboration between teams, collaboration between a team and exploratory, collaboration with parents, collaboration with community agencies, collaboration with another school, collaboration within the student body, etc.) Find all of the details on this page. Deadline to apply is April 15, and you must have been an AMLE member for 12 months preceding the application.

Share Your Expertise: Write for Our Newsletter/Present at Our September Conference!

We are still accepting articles for our spring print newsletter. We will issue PGPs for the articles upon request, and will also accept photographs of activities with brief explanations. Please email them to Susie Highley this week if at all possible.

We are very pleased by the conference proposals we have received thus far, but we still have room for more! For the most part, breakout sessions will be 45-50 minutes; we did have presenters do two sessions last year. Please submit your proposal using this form by Friday, March 8. If you have any questions, contact Susie Highley.

Social Emotional Learning Innovation Fund Grants

Education First is offering grants of up to $5,000 for teachers/teams and $25,000 for districts to support social emotional learning. Last year, they gave over 120 grants. Find all of the details on this page. Applications due March 22. (Photo courtesy of Allison Shelley/The Verbatim Agency for American Education: Images of Teachers and Students in Action)

Help DOE Review the New Indiana Content Standards

The public is now welcome to comment on the new content standards for Computer Science, Middle School ELA, Middle School Mathematics, and Middle School Science. I looked through the first few screens for science, and it was relatively easy and well organized. This is a great opportunity to give your input! This window will be open until April 8.

Schmoker: Embracing the Power of Less

I've seen many rave reviews for a recent presentation Mike Schmoker gave related to this article in the most recent issue of Educational Leadership, with the theme of "The Power of Instructional Leadership." A few other articles are available for free on their "Current Issue" tab, and the overall print version is outstanding.

School Images Free to Use (Creative Commons)

While using your own pictures (for which you "own" the copyright) is generally preferable, there are times when you need a photo you just don't have. These photos from the Alliance for Excellence in Education are free to use, as long as you include the following citation, as for the picture above: Courtesy of Allison Shelley/The Verbatim Agency for American Education: Images of Teachers and Students in Action
