Examining Our Practices
Striving for increased achievement means learning about and implementing new strategies. This also means abandoning some old practices that have been deemed less effective based on years of research. The article below is specifically about the practice of Round Robin reading.
Round Robin reading is where a student reads to the group aloud before the next student continues reading. While it served its purpose at one point in time, there are more effective ways to teach reading. What we now know is that this strategy hinders students' fluency, stamina and comprehension of texts. It also limits the teacher from hearing if all students in a group are applying decoding skills accurately. Round Robin reading is a strategy that should be dropped from our teaching repertoire. The article below does a nice job of discussing how this strategy limits our students' reading growth.
