Words of Wisdom
Dividing Lines
It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.
~ Audre Lorde
Lately, it seems everyone is ready to draw a line dividing "us" from "them." Whatever our differences, the real division happens when we don't respect each other enough to consider diverse opinions, beliefs and cultural mores. After all, isn't that how we develop critical thinking skills? discernment?
Next time conflict arises in your classroom, remind your students that while we don't have to love each other's differences, the ability to recognize those differences respectfully — and perhaps agree to disagree — is how we develop into mature and thoughtful adults. Our differences can serve to ultimately make us better human beings. That's truly something to celebrate.
With something to think about . . .
