Message from Principal Paige

Hello ACMA Family,


Usually the principal’s last message of the school year is one of celebration and appreciation, light, optimistic, and smacking of summer days. This year is different. While I still want to celebrate our students, appreciate our ACMA community, and remain tenaciously optimistic, recent national events have been a sobering reminder of the inequities of our greater society.


The murder of George Floyd and the response to his death (and the longstanding racism in our country) have shaken many in our ACMA family, and left us wishing we could be together to process what is happening. We aren’t, but even though our communication is now mostly through computer screens, we are a community that cares deeply and it is important to say without hesitation that we stand with our Black students, families, and colleagues who experience racism every single day.


We know that institutional racism is a reality in our society and our educational system, and that we have the responsibility to work together to dismantle it. As the principal of our school it is my particular call to do all that I can to ensure every student at ACMA is heard, valued, and engaged, and that everyone in our school community feels safe and supported.


Even as we acknowledge that we have much work to do to create a school culture where we all stand up to racism (as well as sexism, and homophobia) whenever we encounter it, and focus on creating anti-racist policies and practices in schools, I am optimistic that at ACMA we have the care, compassion, and creativity we need to move our school forward.


Art and communication are cornerstones in any societal growth, and it is often the artists who are best able to put voice to both the problems we face and the solutions we need.


At ACMA we have the potential to take up the challenge that writer James Baldwin presented in his 1962 “Letter from a Region of My Mind” when he wrote: “Everything now, we must assume, is in our hands; we have no right to assume otherwise. If we – and now I mean the relatively conscious whites and the relatively conscious blacks, who must, like lovers, insist on, or create, the consciousness of the others – do not falter in our duty now, we may be able, handful that we are, to end the racial nightmare, and achieve our country, and change the history of the world.”


That change starts at home, with each of us, with our school, and with our commitment to each other.

We will be available for text book and library items to be returned on Thursday, June 11th from 1-3pm. We will have staff available for you to drive thru and drop off these items.


The District has decided to let students keep their Chromebooks for the summer. More technology information is located further down.

End Of The Year Items...

Hello ACMA Family,


As we reach the end of the school year, and a strangest spring I can remember, I wanted to reach out to you with three things: Chromebooks, textbooks, and the start of school in the fall.


First, we just learned that all students grades 6-11 can keep their BSD Chromebooks over the summer. We hope this will take any pressure off figuring out how to return them to campus before summer begins, and ensure that you can log in to school right through the end of the year. It will also allow you to access the community events we will schedule in July and early August (an online school picnic, an online open mic night, and an all school Kahoot). Knowing that staying connected is vital in these uncertain times, we want to give all of you opportunities to see each other and know that we are here for them as a school community. We will send dates and times out for those fun optional events soon.


Second, knowing that we will need to use our textbooks and library books in the fall, and that many are currently in backpacks and on bedroom bookshelves, we want to offer an opportunity for those who are able to return ACMA books to campus on Thursday, June 11. We will have a table in the front of the school between 1:00 and 3:00 pm on June 11, and you can bring textbooks and library books in at that time. If a student is not able to return books then, no problem. You will have opportunities to return the books in the fall before school begins.


Finally, while there is still much we don’t know about what the start of the school year will look like in the fall, we do know that things will look different than they have in Septembers past. As we begin to prepare options for the fall, allowing for contingencies based on the guidance we get from the Oregon Department of Education. As soon as we have any information regarding dates and details we will let all of you know. As we build our plans, we want to hear from you. We will take your ideas to the district conversations, speaking for ACMA with a voice that is informed by students, staff, and ACMA families.

Have you purchased your Yearbook?

The ACMA 2019-2020 Yearbook will be arriving next week. On June 24th from 10am - 2pm, yearbooks will be available to be picked up at school. There is still time to purchase a yearbook to capture the memories of this historic year! You can purchase a book in one of two ways using a credit card or debit card. Due to current circumstances, there is not a way to pay for a yearbook with cash or check. The cost of the book will remain $57 for the rest of the year.


  1. Online Payment System . With the BSD Online Payment System you will not be charged a service fee.
  2. At www.yearbookforever.com. Search "Arts & Communication" and click Shop The Store. This site charges a $2.25 service fee for using this site.

Bus Transportation for 2020-21

Even with the crazy times we are facing it is already "that time" to start thinking about NEXT school year. Well, at least it is for transportation! We have sent out several emails requesting this information. If you have completed this request, THANK YOU!


Each year ACMA sends out a request for you to fill out regarding your students transportation needs for next year. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you complete this request (even if you don't need a bus) so that we can give the transportation department the most accurate information as of right now. Please keep in mind that any changes made can take up to 10 business days during "peak times" (think late July and beyond). All routing information will be taken from this questionnaire, please read and answer carefully. ONLY ONE RESPONSE PER EMAIL IS ALLOWED, if you have multiple students you will need to use a different email address for each student or fill out the form for one of your students and then contact me directly by email (maria_iverson@beaverton.k12.or.us) with the subject line as 2020/2021 TRANSPORTATION to add your other student.


At this time I am unable to answer by phone, so if you have any questions please reach out to me by email. I will answer as quickly as possible, however, I will be out for the summer break from 6/22 - 8/17. Any emails during that time will be replied to when I return.

Comcast Announce Partnership to Provide Free Internet Access to Low-Income Beaverton Students and Families During School Closure

In an effort to ensure Beaverton School District students can access the District’s distance learning options under the stay-at-home orders, the District and Comcast’s Oregon/SW Washington region have announced a business partnership to provide up to 500 Beaverton families internet connectivity free of charge.

The District is taking advantage of Comcast’s Internet Essentials, a program designed for low-income families and individuals to acquire access to the internet. In response to the Covid-19 epidemic, Comcast is offering two free months of internet access to qualifying low-income families that apply before June 30. The District is purchasing an additional four months of service, enabling six months of free internet access.

2020 Summer Meal Program

This summer, children can enjoy free breakfast and lunches through the Summer Food Service Program sponsored by Beaverton School District Nutrition Services Department. The Summer Food Service Program is a federally-funded nutrition program. All children, ages 1 through 18 years, are eligible for breakfast and lunch. All children and students from the community are welcome to participate. There is no application or registration required. Parents or guardians are able to pick up meals for children who are not present.


There are 15 school sites providing curbside grab & go meals this summer. Breakfast and lunches will be served (together) Monday through Thursday, June 15 through August 14, 2020, from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the following sites:


Elementary Schools: Aloha-Huber Park K-8, Elmonica, Fir Grove, Greenway, Hazeldale, Kinnaman, McKay, McKinley, William Walker, and Vose.


High Schools: Beaverton, Southridge, Sunset and Westview.


The following apartment sites will also serve grab & go meals (serve time to be determined):

  • Willow Springs Apartments, 3240 SW Doyle Pl, Beaverton, OR 97003

  • Merlo Station Apartments, 2032 SW Merlo Ct, Beaverton, OR 97003

  • LynMarie Apartments, 3660 SW 117th Ave, Beaverton, OR 97005

Beaverton Arts Foundation Awards & Scholarships

The Beaverton Arts Foundation supports young artists and promotes access to the arts for everyone. Their performing and visual arts scholarships recognize outstanding achievement and encourage promising growth. Their scholarships aim to help foster a diverse and flourishing arts community. This year the Beaverton Arts Foundation has awarded 17 scholarships to students in the Beaverton area. We are proud to announce that 6 of the 17 students are ACMA students:

Furlough Days/Work Share FAQ

With information that is available as of May 8, the District anticipates a shortfall between $30 - $45 million, which would cause significant layoffs throughout the District. The furlough days will run from May 15 through July 24. The five furlough days licensed staff take will avoid laying off 55-65 licensed positions.

Colette Cassinelli Awarded 2020 Librarians Network Award

Colette Cassinelli, Library and Instructional Technology Teacher at Sunset High School and ACMA has been awarded the 2020 Librarians Network Award by the ISTE Librarians Network - a division of ISTE - The International Society of Technology in Education.


The award recognizes exceptional educators and leaders who are paving the way for connected learning. We seek those whose exemplary work provides a model for teaching, learning and leading in the digital age.


As a winner of this award, Colette will be honored at the 2020 ISTE Conference & Expo in Anaheim, CA during a breakfast for leaders of the ISTE Professional Learning Networks. She will also be recognized online at iste.org, and receive a plaque, $100 cash prize and free membership to ISTE for one year.

Herzog-Meier Senior Art Scholarship Show Goes Online!

Congratulations to our high school seniors on their amazing artwork submitted to the Herzog-Meier Art Scholarship show.


Since 1988, Herzog-Meier Auto Center has donated more than $100,000 for 210 scholarships to Beaverton School District seniors. The company has continued its collaboration with the Beaverton Education Foundation. The BEF develops and maintains strategic partnerships to fund programs that inspire and increase student achievement, for logistics, media and event support.


This year Herzog-Meier Auto Center & BEF worked together to move the show and adjudication online due to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding Covid-19. Scholarship recipients are selected solely on artistic merit by a panel composed of professionals in art, media and design from Nike, Studio Cue and Oregon Society of Artists.

Student Passwords in ParentVue

To make it easier for parents to support students, the ParentVue application and mobile app now include the initially assigned student password. This information is available on the Student Info tab. If the initially assigned password has been changed, the parent will see the date of change and instructions to contact the school for assistance in changing the password. Parents can also email shd@beaverton.k12.or.us for help with student technology issues.

Student Chromebooks

Students may continue to keep their District-issued Chromebook during the summer unless they no longer need it or are leaving the District. Families should contact the school if they would like to return the Chromebook.

Summer Technology Support for Students

Due to staffing limitations during the summer, the Student Help Desk phone support will only be available to students enrolled in summer school. For students who are not in summer school but who need technical support for district related items, students will still be able to submit requests by emailing shd@beaverton.k12.or.us.

Please take a few moments to complete the BSD Annual Parent Survey! This year, we would like to know about your experience with remote learning while schools have been closed. Our goal is to ensure that every member of our school community feels welcomed, valued, and informed, so it is important for all parents/guardians to complete the survey.


A link to the 2020 Annual Parent Survey was sent to all valid parent email addresses on Tuesday, May 26, 2020. The deadline to participate is next Monday, June 8, 2020.

Planning for the Opening of School

As we wind down this school year, plans are currently underway to welcome our students back in the fall. We know you have many questions. We need to be prepared for several possible scenarios for returning to school, based on expected direction and guidance from the Governor’s Office and the Oregon Department of Education. Possible scenarios include heading back to schools and classrooms with moderate social distancing requirements; a hybrid of classroom and remote learning instruction; or fully remote learning.


The District has convened an interdepartmental planning group to develop these scenarios. While the timeline for planning is very tight, we will be providing opportunities for staff, parents, students and community to share their thoughts about how the district can best serve students and families in each scenario. We will also provide further communication on how you can weigh in, in the coming weeks.

As the District works to develop a plan for safely welcoming students and staff back to school in the fall there may be opportunities for District-wide communications. We will send communications via SchoolMessenger to family’s email addresses. We will also post important information on our District website and social media platforms. Please check your email regularly throughout the summer to stay informed.

ACT Test Results Are In

Good afternoon Juniors!


Remember the ACT you took back in February? Well the results are in! Only problem is... I don't really have a good way to distribute them to you as they are in paper form. Some of you may already be aware that you can view your ACT score online. In cast you did not know how, all you need to know is your "ACT ID". What's that, you say? Good question! There are 2 ways you can find your ACT ID:


  • If you put in your e-mail address during pre-registration, then ACT has it. Simply go to their website http://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/scores.html and click "Forgot Password" when putting in your e-mail. This should automatically send your ACT ID to your e-mail address. If you did not provide your e-mail, you can get your ACT ID by calling them directly at (319) 337 - 1270. Press option 1, then option 3.


  • Alternatively, district is going to eventually upload these ACT scores to Synergy / Studentvue and you will be able to view them there. I do not know when district will be able to do this though in light of the current craziness happening out there.
