Summer School Reading Support Explanation
English Landing students who need extra reading support and will be entering grades 2-3-4-5 for the 2018-2019 school year and attending SUMMER school at English Landing have the opportunity to participate in a 90 minute reading intervention support during SUMMER School (June 3 to July 4, 2018). Additionally, some small groups of Kindergarten and first grade students who need extra reading support will be seen for 10-20 minutes as the SUMMER school schedule allows.
Our SUMMER School reading interventionist will work with English Landing students who ended the 2017-2018 school year receiving a level of Tier 2 or Tier 3 support during PowerBlocks.
What will my child be doing during the reading intervention program? The reading intervention program follows a structured curriculum including shared reading and writing opportunities, guided reading, word study, and fluency and comprehension practice. Class sizes will be kept small with 12-15 students in each intervention block allowing small group and one-on-one instruction to occur daily.
Will my child miss specials/exploratory classes during the summer school day? No, your child will participate in the reading intervention program during his/her grade level’s English Language Arts block. He/She will spend the remainder of the day with his/her assigned summer school classroom.
Can my child participate in the reading intervention program but not attend full day summer school? Yes, but parent transportation to and from school will need to be provided if this is the case. The 90 minute intervention period for each grade level will be determined after summer school building schedules have been created. For attendance tracking, all students must be enrolled in summer school and assigned to a classroom, even if your child plans to attend the reading intervention program only.
We need your help. PLEASE enroll your child today for SUMMER School!

Career Share April Classroom Visits
Parental involvement in your child’s classroom is one of the leading factors in raising self-esteem and academic achievement. This can go beyond attendance at Parent Teacher Conferences and family nights at English Landing. We want to see you at Career Share!
Each of our English Landing families are unique ---with their own talents. Career Share is an opportunity for every child at English Landing to showcase his/her family to his/her classmates. Career Share is an amazing opportunity for you to visit your student’s classroom. Your involvement will not only make their day, but provide another opportunity for you to partner with English Landing and your child’s education.
So far this school year, 169 families have volunteered for Career Share. Our goal is to have EVERY student have a member(s) of his/her family come share in his/her classroom about their job and careers.
It truly means the world to our Eagles. Please take a moment to sign up for a 20 minute time slot in your student’s classroom to share with their classroom.

REPEAT: Take Your Child to Work Day: Student Attendance
Dear English Landing Parent(s),
As families begin to make plans for Take Your Child to Work Day (April 26, 2018), I want to make sure you have accurate information regarding how student attendance will be documented on this day.
Up until two years ago, a letter had been sent home with all Park Hill elementary students stating that they would be counted present at school if a signed form and Take Your Child to Work Day reflection activity was returned. As of two years ago this was no longer the case since following this former practice violated the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education guidelines regarding student attendance.
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education language regarding daily student attendance states: “Students must be in attendance in an instructional capacity under the direct supervision of a certificated employee of the district to be counted for attendance purposes.” Therefore, if students are absent, for part or all of the day, on Take Your Child to Work Day (Thursday, April 26th), they will be counted as absent for the time they are not in school.
In Park Hill at the elementary level, we do not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences. Therefore, when a student is absent, it is simply counted as an absence. At English Landing Elementary School, we do not recognize perfect (100%) attendance. We strive for student attendance to be at or above 95%.
I encourage you to make the decision that best meets the needs of your child/family when determining if your child will participate in Take Your Child to Work Day (April 26, 2018). Please let me know if you have any additional questions regarding attendance procedures for Take Your Child to Work Day (April 26, 2018).
Dr. Kerry Roe

CELEBRATING STUDENT BIRTHDAYS AT ENGLISH LANDING
Celebrating Student Birthdays: (Park Hill Parent/Student Handbook pages 37-38):
We are happy to celebrate student birthdays and half birthdays (if your child has a summer birthday) at English Landing! To protect the health and safety of our students, families may bring pre-packaged treats to school to share with classmates. In order to address any known allergy concerns, a label listing ingredients should be affixed to the package. Due to allergies and other food intolerances, please consult with your classroom teacher before the pre-packaged treats are brought to school. As a healthier alternative, Park Hill Food Service offers a variety of nutritious treats that may be purchased.
At English Landing we need your HELP! Many birthday treats arrive at the beginning of the school day which provides us time to review the class list regarding food allergies or food intolerances, however, many other birthday treats arrive during lunch and often right at the same time the treat needs to be distributed to students. PLEASE plan on arriving earlier for lunch (at least 15 minutes) to give us time to check the pre-packaged treat ingredients with the students in the classroom who have food allergies or food intolerances. Our school nurse, Mrs. Kimbrel, and office staff, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Wood, or Mrs. Melvin, will help with this process so when the lunchroom staff teachers distribute the treat in the cafeteria, additional steps have been taken to ensure we are protecting the health and safety of our eagles.
