Shout Outs - Submitted by RHS Staff Members
Shout out to Ken Brown, Angela Brown, and Bill Edwards for coordinating Saturday NMSI tutoring sessions for our students!!!!
To Dr. Jones and Mrs. Ford for everything they do for our FFA students! They have built a thriving program for our students to learn and be engaged! Also, thank you so much for the wonderful breakfast we were served Thursday morning!
I would like to give a Shout Out to Mrs. Metts. Although she is out, she is actively engaged in her classroom. She has created PowerPoints with embedded audio of her walking her students through how to get started for the semester. She gives students an overview of what to expect, how to succeed in her class, and how to access the various digital platforms they will be using (Teams, Study Island, etc).
A huge thank you to Jennifer Simmons for engraving 60 graphing calculators to help prepare for the second semester!
Though we are out of gift cards, we will have some other prizes to win. Keep those shoutouts coming!!!
NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
It has been a tremendous few weeks for our Wildcats. Our Beta Club, Odyssey of the Mind teams, Academic Challenge team, and Eastern Region Orchestra students have represented the school very well! Thank you to those staff members who give up so much time to ensure these students are engaged in these important experiences.
This month is The Energy Bus Love Your Passengers Campaign. We’d love it if you’d take a moment to click on the link and leave a 30 second video about what you love about our students and staff!!
Interact Club Advisor needed. We are in need of someone to take over as advisor for the Interact Club. The Interact Club is sponsored by the Richlands Rotary Club and is a service club. If you would like more information about this please contact Jeff Fuller.
- Report Cards go home with students tomorrow, February 25th. At 10:05 an announcement will be made to release students to report to their homeroom to pick up report cards. Once they have their report cards, they should report to their third period. The tardy bell for third period will ring at 10:15.
Please do not forget to handout the remaining student IDs! They are in ziplock baggies in your boxes.
- Please be sure to stand in the hallway at each class change. This is a great way to both monitor student behavior and greet your students as they arrive.
The varsity girls basketball team will be playing @ North Lenoir at 6 pm on Tuesday, Feb 26th.

Testing News - From Mrs. Jarman
Frequently asked questions about WORKKEYS/CRC…
What is the WorkKeys test?
The WorkKeys test is honestly the most beneficial test that we administer to our students. There are 3 assessments that make up the WorkKeys test– Applied Math, Graphic Literacy (formally Locating Information) and Workplace Documents (formally Reading for Information).
By earning a level 3 or higher on each test, students earn their National Career Readiness Certification (CRC). A Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum level of certification can be earned.
Bronze: Minimum Level 3 score on all assessments
*Silver: Minimum Level 4 score on all assessments
*Gold: Minimum Level 5 score on all assessments
*Platinum: Minimum Level 6 score on all assessments
*cords provided for students to wear at graduation
NONE of the 3 tests are tied directly to any particular CTE concentration!!! All students that are required to test, regardless of their CTE concentration, take the same 3 tests. I have gone through several levels of the different tests and the majority of the questions require you to use common knowledge, read the question carefully before answering (simple questions but they can be easily missed if you read them too quickly), use the information given to draw conclusions….a lot of common sense, critical thinking, job skill, work-with-what-you-are-given type things. Each test is timed (55 minutes) so students have to read, interpret and answer quickly.
Who takes the WorkKeys test?
All seniors and early grad juniors that have completed or will have completed a CTE concentration (4 courses in the same pathway…1 being a level II) by the end of this year are required to take this test by the state of NC. It would be fantastic if all of our students could take this test… unfortunately the state will only fund those that are CTE completers at this time.
When is the test given?
April 8-11…Early grad seniors tested in Dec.
Why is WorkKeys important to our students?
The WorkKeys test is how students earn their National Career Readiness Certification (CRC). This certification can be used to get a job and sometimes even better pay at a job (some businesses pay more the higher the level of certification). Students need to understand that they may be required to take this test to apply for some jobs (Belks, OMH…) or for some businesses to even get an application. Those that are being allowed to take it for FREE really need to take advantage of this opportunity. Anyone required to have their CRC for a job will have to go somewhere and pay for it themselves if they do not get a chance to take it for FREE in high school.
Visit https://www.workreadycommunities.org/NC/133/businesses (also on school website) to see a list of business in just Onslow County that required CRC.
Why are WorkKeys results important to RHS?
There are 5 components that schools are graded on by the state to determine our overall school grade. They are:
- ACT proficiency results
- Graduation rate
- WorkKeys proficiency results (proficiency is given for those that earn a Silver, Gold or Platinum certification)
- EOC proficiency
- EOC growth
Our results on all of these components are averaged together and this score is used to determine our overall school grade. RHS is graded on ALL of these things so ALL of us have to do what we can to prepare ALL of our students. WorkKeys is NOT just for CTE teachers….ALL of us have to do what we can to help our students be successful.
How can I help?
- Remind all 138 students that they have WorkKeys prep sessions every Monday and Wednesday from February 25-April 4th during block A of PowerHour (group rosters are attached)
- Show the videos that are on the RHS website to your students (screenshot of videos is below)
- Post the cord info sheet (attached) in your classroom
- Take advantage of the links on the RHS website (screenshot of all that is available below) with your students and encourage them to use them on their own as well.
All of these links are on the RHS website>Our School>School Supported Areas>Testing>Helpful links
THESE ARE EXCELLENT problems of the day or bell ringers!! An easy way to pull in the WorkKeys test each day that does not require any planning or grading J
If you have ANY questions whatsoever about the WorkKeys test PLEASE let me know…I will be happy to help you!!!

OCS INSTRUCTIONAL FRAMEWORK MODULE 3
OCS Weekly Update
Hello, OCS Family! Another week of learning and excellence is in the books for Onslow County Schools! Read below for the latest district happenings.
KINDERGARTEN PRE-REGISTRATION
Kindergarten pre-registration is coming up on April 2-3, 2019. To be eligible, your child must turn 5 on or before August 31, 2019. You can register your child at the school he or she will be attending.
CTE HAPPENINGS
After a months-long application and interview process, OCS CTE Director Chris Bailey was named the North Carolina CTE Administrator of the Year. He was presented with his award at the Spring CTE Administrators Conference Tuesday in Pinehurst, NC.
Leading up to this honor, Mr. Bailey was named the Southeastern NC Regional CTE Administrator of the Year. He will now be eligible to be considered for the CTE Administrator of the Year honor for the entire Southeastern region of the United States.
Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Mr. Bailey!
DID YOU KNOW? CTE Programs provide the skills training that addresses the needs of high-growth industries, such as healthcare, renewable energy and STEM fields.
TEACHER SUPPLIES DISTRIBUTION
After Hurricane Florence, Onslow County Schools received a tremendous amount of support from our community and people across the country. On Monday, during the teacher workday, OCS teachers were invited to take what they needed from the supplies and book donations the district received.
More than 100 teachers came to the Christmas Cheer building on Hargett Street to “shop” and take what they needed from about 10 tables piled with school supplies and dozens of boxes of books. Teachers were able to get children’s books, novels, reference books and more for their classrooms, as well as notebooks, paper, pencils, folders and art supplies for their students.
Thank you to all who made generous donations to our staff and students and to Onslow Community Outreach for helping make this event possible!
NWES WAX MUSEUM
Second graders at Northwoods Elementary School took visitors back in time at their wax museum event this week.
Students chose historical figures to research and write about leading up to the event, and then on Thursday, they brought them to life. The students dressed as their figure and set up a station where parents and other visitors could stop by and watch videos they made of themselves explaining who they were dressed as and why their figures were important.
Some of the historical figures that made an appearance included George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Walt Disney, Amelia Earhart and Neil Armstrong.
BOE MEETING FEBRUARY 26
On Tuesday, February 26, the Onslow County Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m. in the Family Education Center at the OCS Central Services Office, located at 200 Broadhurst Road in Jacksonville.
The selection and election of the new superintendent, an elementary construction update and future budget planning are on the meeting’s agenda.
