Barley Sheaf Family Bulletin

September 2022

A message from our principal

Dear Parents,

We hope you had an enjoyable summer vacation. Our summer has been productive. Staff have been involved in writing curriculum, reading professionally, attending graduate courses, conferences and workshops, as well as presenting at seminars. This summer, teachers had opportunities to receive training in technology, literacy, math, Responsive Classroom and much more. Additionally, staff have been busily preparing for the upcoming school year. We have had a few new additions to the Barley Sheaf learning community. All are highly qualified and will enhance our fine faculty. We warmly welcome our new staff members to Barley Sheaf.

We look forward to welcoming all students back for full time, in-person instruction starting on September 6th. Students that do not ride the bus or walk to school should be dropped on the front sidewalk between 8:30-8:50am. Please note that this year students will only be using the front entrance to enter the building in the morning.

Please be sure to read our newsletters throughout the year as they contain important school news and updates. Also, our email addresses have changed. If you are trying to email a staff member please note that emails are now

We look forward to working with you this school year and hope to see you at Back to School Night on September 29th.

Karen L. Gabruk

We'd like to offer a warm Barley welcome to our newest staff members!

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year! We are excited to welcome families and staff back to school, and hope you found time over the summer to do the things that bring you joy.

A strong home and school partnership supports a child’s academic, social, and emotional well-being. As we begin a new year, I encourage you to take advantage of opportunities to become involved in our school community. The annual Ice Cream Social on Friday, September 9th is a great way to meet many of our families and staff, and we look forward to welcoming parents into classrooms on Thursday, September 29th for Back-to-School Night. Throughout the year, you will have many opportunities to participate in a variety of PTO events, classroom activities, and school-wide celebrations. Keep an eye on our monthly newsletters and the Barley Sheaf website for the latest news and information.

I look forward to meeting you in the months ahead, and I am excited for a successful 2022-2023 school year!

Hello Parents!

As always, the nurse's office is available to our students as an essential health resource for all of our students. If your child requires any medications, inhalers, etc., please reach out to the health office at (908) 284-7588. Thank you!

Erin Eosso, R.N.

School Nurse

I'm so excited to begin a new school year!

As the school counselor, my goal is to promote the social, emotional and educational growth of the students at Barley Sheaf. By meeting with parents, collaborating with teachers and staff, and consulting with community organizations, I am working to meet the needs of the students in my care. I meet with students in individual, small group and classroom sessions to teach students how to understand and manage their emotions, develop skills for learning, and gain awareness of others’ feelings. We work together to problem solve and learn to make responsible decisions.

I'm looking forward to getting to know each and every student at Barley Sheaf Elementary School.

Please see the Back To School tips below to help your children transition from summer to a new school year!

School Counselor

We are grateful to have our attentive and professional custodians as part of our Barley team.

Who are we? The PTO is a group of volunteer parents, just like you, who work to raise funds, plan parties, and generally support our teachers, staff members, children, and families. Funds we raise provide educational assemblies for the children, a big send-off field trip for the Fourth Graders to Camp Mason, and many other perks for our teachers and students. We take pride in being able to provide these things for our school. Barley Sheaf School was named as one of the top 50 schools in the state and we are so proud of our teachers and staff for all the amazing work that they do.

What do we want? We look to our parents to contribute to our school in many ways. We have fun activities to attend, including Family Event Nights and Parents Night Out Events too! We ask for parent volunteers as Home Room Parents to help teachers with projects and classroom events. In 2017, we built a patio and outdoor eating area for the children to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the school. In 2018, we were able to raise $30,000 to help rebuild our library, in 2019 we were able to install a new electronic sign out front and in 2021 we were able to place water bottle filling stations in the hallways. We are very proud of what we can do as a team. We would love to have YOU as a part of that team!

What can you do? Get involved now! There are many ways to receive communication from the school and PTO.

  • Virtual Backpack. Sign up to our Virtual Backpack now. The Virtual Backpack is a way of receiving communication from the school. You can go to the Barley Sheaf website ( and click on Virtual Backpack.
  • Membership Toolkit. Join Membership Toolkit, which is an online communication system, directory, and store all in one. Click on this link to add yourself, pay for your annual PTO membership ($13), which also includes directory access:
  • PTO E-Blast. You can also have the PTO E-Blast (email) you with important information from the PTO. Join our email list via Membership Toolkit. Email is free and the best way to receive updated and frequent PTO communication!
  • Facebook. Lastly, you can like our FaceBook page. Some really great information gets sent there, so please "like" us at Many classes also have their own Facebook page for grade-specific information, such as if your child should ever forget their homework!

Please consider signing up to volunteer once the new school year begins. You will find many different activities for ALL kinds of parents. We only ask that if you DO sign up for a committee, that you plan to help. You can always email us later in the year and let us know if you will be available to help with something. We appreciate EVERY bit of help that we get! Many hands make light work! Should you have any questions, please email us at We can’t wait for another amazing year!

Thank you and welcome to Barley Sheaf!!!

We are excited to welcome our Barley parents and guardians to an evening devoted to meeting teachers and gathering information about your children's upcoming school year. We look forward to seeing you on September 29th!

Buses and Vans

Please ensure that your child knows his/her bus number. Each morning, buses and vans will park and unload our K‐4 students on the side of the building. Upon arrival, students will be greeted by staff members and enter the building through the designated entrances.

Parent Drop-off

Students may be dropped off in front of the school from 8:30-8:50 am along the front sidewalk. When driving your child to school, please enter by turning right into the first school driveway on Barley Sheaf Road. For safety reasons, cars may not make a left turn to enter school grounds during arrival and dismissal. Please display your family car tag and follow the directions given by staff on duty. Click here to request a family car tag. Students should exit the car on the school side of the vehicle in order to ensure student safety. All students will walk along the front sidewalk and enter the school through the main entrance. Always remember to stay in line when dropping students off in front of the building. Cars may not drive into the back parking lot of the school after 8:25am. If you plan to walk your child to the front door, you must park in the south visitor parking lot (in front of the playground patio) and cross at the crosswalk to the main entrance.

Walkers should enter the building through the main entrance.

Buses and Vans

Students riding buses will be called for dismissal as their bus arrives. Please ensure that your child knows their bus number. Staff members will be available to assist students and ensure they locate and board the correct bus.

Walkers and Parent Pick-up

Dismissal Schedule:

  • 3:25-3:35 - Last Names A-M

  • 3:35-3:45 - Last Names N-Z

Both walkers and students for parent pick up will be dismissed from the front entrance. For safety reasons, cars may not make a left turn to enter school grounds during arrival and dismissal. Please display your family car tag and follow the directions given by staff on duty. Click here to request a family car tag. Children will be called to the front foyer as parents arrive, and staff will assist with loading students into your vehicle. Parents must stay in their cars at all times and remain in the car line unless directed to proceed by a staff member. Pick up will start at 3:25.

We cannot change a child’s designated bus stop or assigned bus. If your child normally rides a bus home, but you will be picking him/her up, a note must be sent to the teacher.

If you must sign your child out prior to dismissal, please do so before 3:15 pm. Please come to the main office and your child will be called to the office for dismissal.

If your child attends the YMCA after-care and you make a change to their dismissal, please contact both the YMCA and the Barley Sheaf main office regarding any changes.

If someone other than the parent/guardian is taking your child home at the end of the day, please write a note to your child’s teacher detailing the change and giving permission for your child to leave with this person. Please remember that you may not take a child other than your own unless written permission from that child’s parent has been given to the school.
