Poor Dawgs.
I am always excited to see the Oregon Ducks and the Washington Huskies square off on the gridiron each fall. It's fun for me to come from Washington and see the passionate fan follower-ship that is seen in this town. Not only that, but the rivalry is something else. This year I journeyed to Seattle to participate in an AVID training on Friday. I stayed with a good friend Friday night so that we could both go see the game on Saturday; and a great game it was. Both teams were relentless on each other. Despite standing in the rain and coming away with a loss, it was an awesome experience to see Husky stadium and the fun everyone was having. Oregon fans traveled well and showed strength in numbers. I am looking forward to attending next year here in Eugene. I hope you enjoyed the game or other fun activities this weekend. I'm ready to dive back into the fray and get busy with the job of teaching and learning (I know, I'm a nerd).
In The Know
Earthquake Drill - We postponed last weeks earthquake drill to this week due to schedule considerations. This week we will be having our earthquake drill on Friday morning at the beginning of 2nd period. Please review what to do in an earthquake with your class (drop, cover, hold on). We will also practice an evacuation drill after the "earthquake." This will be a directed evacuation, without an alarm. Additionally, I have included a link below to a short (1min 20sec) video that you can show your class in preparation. I have also included a 2 page document with tips for people with disabilities that you are welcome to review.
What to do in an Earthquake video
Health Team Drill - We will also have a health team drill on Thursday morning during 2nd period. This would involve using the PA once during 2nd period to call a drill. No response is needed from staff unless you serve on the Health Team.
Curriculum Council - Please look for and gather any AVID Curriculum resources that you may have stored in shelves. We will be looking into these at our meeting on Tuesday.
Group Agreements - I have attached a link to our Group Agreements. It is important to review these so that you are aware of the agreements that we have made to each other. I need to do this each year to make sure I am doing my part as well. I make mistakes and I know others do to. If you break an agreement, own it. Then do your best to support the agreement as we move forward. I believe in grace and perseverance. Meaning that we will always be graceful with each other, but we will always strive to do and be better.

Respectful Space - If you are using another colleagues space please make sure you are not disrupting their space and leaving it better than you found it.
TA's Out of Class - If you have a TA please give them work to do. I have been rounding up students during class time and sending them back to class. This is difficult to do when the students shares that the teacher just let them go hang out. We can't do this. If a student is going to earn credit for being a TA, they need to serve the teacher as their assistant. Thank you for your help with this.

Congratulations to our Fall Sport Athletes!! - We have some exceptional student athletes in our Fall sports programs. Congratulations to all of our students and their focus on academics. We are very proud of you. The following GPA's represent the team average (Boys Soccer 3.97, Volleyball 3.85, Girls Soccer 3.68, Girls X-Country 3.98, Boys X-Country 3.99, Boys Soccer 3.57, Football 2.92).
Appreciation for Casandra Kamens - Our CCR day (last Wednesday) is an enormous endeavor with multiple layers and moving parts. To organize this information and get it out to staff in a timely way is difficult to do at best. Casandra was able to organize teams, facilitate a process whereby teams and counselors had feedback and input into the processes and then moved forward with these recommendations to support our students. While teachers in all parts of the building had different roles, each section of the day was highly organized and calibrated. Thank you for your attention to detail and for looking out for your colleagues. Without your oversight and attention to the things that matter we would have had a really rough day. You are very appreciated!!
Mary Beth Hepp Elam - had 40 students complete their LEAP contract on Wednesday. Nice work getting this large number of students to complete their contracts. Well done.
