First High school Robotics competion was a success!

The LPS Lions High School Robotics Team launched our first ever competitive season on Saturday, November 2, 2019! It was an exciting day of challenges that started with last minute gear changes and axle rod shortening to pass inspection. The students had incredible grace under pressure.

We were up against many teams with years of experience. Greenville started their Robotics program in 1994! Thankfully, these teams were very helpful and friendly. We finished in the middle of the pack. Our final rank was #19 out of 28. We were pleased with our first go at this and walked away with many ideas for our next tournament, to be held on January 25th in Sachse, TX.

Hour of Code Award Ceremony

Thursday, Dec. 12th, 4-5pm

Secondary Campus, Room 238 (Computer Science)

We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works. But only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Only 45% of all high schools teach computer science. This year at LPS, we offer 3 Computer Science courses open to 8th grade and above. That’s why we are joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 9-15). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code. Our Hour of Code is making a statement that LPS is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. To continue bringing programming activities to your students, we want to make our Hour of Code event huge.

7th through 12th grade students should plan to take part of this Hour of Code event. Next week, the sign up sheet will be sent out to start reserving your seat. Chromebooks not required, but depending on # of attendees, it will be helpful to bring your own device. I encourage parents with coding experience to volunteer to coach on this day, reach or share the news on social media channels.

After Hours Student Enrichment

Does your student need after school care, regular help with homework, supervision before or after sports, choir, band, or time to hang out with friends before you pick them up? We have a new program for Secondary students called After Hours that might meet your needs!

After Hours provides a supervised setting for our Secondary students and Elementary siblings from 3:45 to 6 pm right on our campus. This is being offered at $10 per day, you pay only for the days you use, we are flexible around sports practices, or other after school commitments. There is drop-in availability as well. Please call or text Kelly Skinner at 559-977-0505 for more details and registration information.

Help us improve the LPS CTE Program!

To get a better idea of what we want our future CTE program to look like, this survey has been created for our students and parents. The results of this survey will help create a CTE committee and direct our CTE program for course offerings.

We need as many responses as possible to help us direct our CTE program to better fit our student population!

Here is the Survey link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScNiFForYW2GqKIYsJS5610uuf3Q90KfmC3ssq0KgzHTtlu0g/viewform?usp=sf_link

Thank you!

Girl's Go CyberStart team meetings will take place on Thursdays, right after school in room 238!

Girls Go CyberStart empowers high school girls to join a global cybersecurity community, consider exciting career opportunities in a growing field, and learn skills that will ensure our country remains a safe place to live, work, and play online. During the free program, you’ll discover if you have a natural aptitude for cybersecurity, while developing skills and techniques that will give you a significant advantage if you choose to pursue a career in this profession. You don’t need any prior experience in gaming or computer science to participate!

Participants compete for chance to win cash prizes for themselves and their schools, as well as $500 in college scholarships.

We now have 2 months until the competition begins and need more team members! Contact Nghi Nguyen to join the team by emailing nnguyen@lpsfrisco.net
