Updates from Señor Hall for Spanish 1
Welcome to Spanish 1
¡Bienvenidos! Welcome to online Spanish 1! I'm so excited to begin a new semester with you! Me llamo Señor Hall ~ My name is Mr Hall, and I am your Spanish 1 teacher for the Spring Semester, 2020!!
Welcome to the course!!! Nice to have you in class learning some español!!
Today's post has a LOT of important information for you, so please be sure you read/watch/listen to it all! You may want to take notes as well.
Our course starts Monday, January 27th.
Now, please read through some of the points below that expand on what you learned in the presentation above.
1. Please read over and make sure you understand and are willing to abide by the Spanish Department Guidelines. It explains our Academic Integrity Policy and what you are and are not allowed to use to help you complete your work (hint: you can only use your brain and the content within the course, along with asking me for help!).
2. Please see NCVPS's technology requirements HERE Please note that for this course, students must have access to a microphone and be able to record audio.
3. Review the NCVPS Getting Started Guide for Students. You can find it HERE.
4. You may contact me in a variety of different ways. These are listed in order of preference and are also listed in the "Instructor Information" are on the course home page.
5. Here is a link to the Spanish I Schedule of Assignments - Spring 2020.
Inbox/Conversations: At anytime, day or night, you can message me in Canvas by clicking on "Inbox" in the left-hand sidebar, going to our course in the upper left corner, and then clicking on my message thread on the left. If you need to send me a new message, you may need to search for my name, which you can do on the top right. Canvas messages are the primary and preferred method of contact for asynchronous communication.
- Required Live Classes (RLCs): I, along with the other Spanish 1 teachers, will hold required live classes online in Blackboard Collaborate. You are required to attend 6 total (1 per unit), but are welcome to attend more. For the calendar of dates/times, go to the Required Live Classes page from the home page. Go ahead and mark your calendar for Getting Started (GS) and Unidad Uno (U1)!!!!
- Email: My email is herman.hall@ncpublicschools.gov and I check and respond to e-mail daily, usually between the hours of: 8am - 9pm. Before you get your course login, you can use this email. But after that, email should be used between me and parents/schools only.
- Phone: My phone number is (252) 256-7082 cell w/ texting and I check my phone messages and respond daily. My official office hours are posted in the "Instructor Information" part of the course. Phone is the least quick/convenient way for me to respond though since I can't always answer instantly. Please DO NOT call/text me after 9:00 pm! Any calls between 9 pm and 8 am will automatically be muted and sent to voicemail. Any texts sent during that time will not be received.
Ok, it's time to get started! I know we are going to do great things together this semester. Be sure to message me (Inbox) if you have any questions! Once you watched the video above, you should go to the Getting Started Unit (see video above to see how to get there). Go carefully through each page of that unit to learn how to navigate Canvas and important information about Spanish 1. There are also several graded assignments in that unit!
Need help figuring out where to go? Check out this doc. that has some screenshots to guide you!

Required Live Class (RLC) Schedule
The purpose of the Required Live Classes (RLC) is to give students access to their teachers for lessons, Q & A and support in their Spanish classes. The RLC sessions are offered every week at a variety of times. You may attend any session you like. Choose the one that best fits your schedule.
Here is a Google Calendar link to all the Spanish 1 sessions:
Just pay attention to the times, dates and topics:
Remember GS = Getting Started
U1 = Unit 1
U2 = Unit 2
After attending each session, you need to complete a brief reflective assignment including the following items:
When did you attend (provide date and time)?
Who was the teacher/presenter?
What did you cover/learn? (You should include a complete copy of your notes with at least 10 specific things discussed/covered.)
What do you still have questions about? (You should always have questions, so do NOT put "none.")
What do you need to work on/improve? (This should be specific, regarding at least one thing that was discussed in the session.)
How do you plan to improve in the area/s listed above? (Again, be as specific as possible.)
How can I (your teacher) help you? (Again, be as specific as possible.)
Please use COMPLETE SENTENCES in your responses and submit this at the bottom of the RLC Assignment page.
