Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
AHOY, PIRATES!
What an exciting week! We went from Pirate Palooza to the playoffs in grand style. Despite all of the work that went into making this week the success that it was, you never complained. Instead, you conducted yourselves in the true Pirate way...with pride and excellence. Student needs remained at the forefront as you continued to provide high-quality education to our children while allowing them to experience learning in diverse ways. Our community support shined through event after event. This is a testament to the work you do each day. Our community believes in what we are doing, and it shows. This week promises to be just as exciting. I look forward to sharing it with you and our children. Have fun with our children! Each day we must remember that we "get" to do this as a career. We chose to serve children and our community as educators. How noble!
With that, I submit the Captain’s Log. #2020vision #committedtoeXcellence #eXcellencemarksthespot cje
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!
Cecil Lizana, Walter "Skip" King, Everett Tice, Mykeal Hall, Amber McJunkin, Brad McJunkin, and other Pirates who have served and are serving. We thank you for protecting our liberties at all costs from those who would strip them from us. Because of women and men like you, we enjoy places called Pass Christian and DeLisle in a strong country.

It's Mental Health Awareness Week!
Daily life can yield many drastic differences in our emotions or we or our students may face challenges that are overwhelming. These and other factors some being hereditary can impact our mental health. But, what is mental health? According to Medical News Today (2017), "Mental health refers to our cognitive, behavioral, and emotional wellbeing - it is all about how we think, feel, and behave. The term 'mental health' is sometimes used to mean an absence of a mental disorder. Mental health can affect daily life, relationships, and even physical health." We have to break the stigma of talking about mental health and learn to confront it like we do physical health by seeking help.
This week, we will take an in-depth look at mental health and how we can be a beacon of hope for each other and our students. As we work to take care of our students, I encourage you to look for lessons that apply to your personal life. We must take care of our own personal mental health before we can take care of others. I believe our smart watches may be on to something...take time to breathe. Let's also be sure to CHECK on each other and our students. Here are some things that you can do to be proactive:
C-Take Care of yourself and one another. You can not help someone if you are in need/not well.
H-Seek Help for yourself and for others.
E-Educate yourself on signs and symptoms of depression and mental illness.
C-Counseling can be helpful.
K-Remember to be Kind to each other as people are going through things that may not show on the surface.
Thank you to our counselors and Ms. Bang for organizing this week's activities.
LEGACY DINNER & STATE OF THE DISTRICT UPDATE: Employees with 6-10 years of Pirate experience received their invitations for the 2019 meeting. We will talk about employee retention achievement, and how this generation of employees will continue to help us maintain our identity as Pirates. If you have not already done so, please RSVP to give us a correct accounting of those who will attend. Date: Tuesday, November 12, 2019 Time: 6 pm
FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: OUR TEAM MADE HISTORY! Several teachers have indicated they were interested in attending the game this Friday in the McComb area (We won't say their names.). We are willing to take a fan bus for employees and students. Football boosters are also working on a plan. We will go with the best-laid plan. Look for more information from Coach Tim Ladner in the coming days.
The FABLAB is Coming to Pirate Nation!
The FabLab is coming to Harrison County with the first stop in Pass Christian Schools. The FabLab is a portable makerspace with all that is needed to give students an opportunity to think critically and creatively. Mr. Scott Beebee will set up the FabLab Jan 13-16 (or 2 days at each secondary school) and make himself available to speak to teachers during your planning periods about how you can use the FABLAB in your classrooms. This a great way to get things started. It will also give him an opportunity to talk to you about our upcoming summer camps.
SUMMER CAMPS, TOO!
We have plans for 4 summer camps to be held over 3 weeks at the K-8 building during the weeks of May 26 - June 11. Camp titles include Robotics, Arduino Coding, Scratch Game Design, and a Girls in STEM camp. Each camp would be from 8-2:30 for 4 days a week.
The cost per camper is a nominal $50 per camper per camp. If a child can not pay, he will communicate with the administration in PCSD to confirm the need, and FABLAB would take care of the child's fees. We do not want finances to be an obstacle. We will accept 20 students per camp in rising grades 4-8.
We will need interested teachers to help the FabLab team run the camps. Teachers will receive a stipend as well as earn CEU credit. Ideally, we would like to have two teachers per camp.
Mississippi Works Magazine Release
From MDE: School districts will be receiving free copies of the inaugural issue of Mississippi Works magazine. The State Workforce Investment Board in the Office of the Governor and publishing partner ABPG produced the publication in cooperation with the Mississippi Department of Education. The objective is to publish an annual resource guide for secondary school students that focuses on education about high-demand career opportunities here in Mississippi.
2019 Read for the Record
From MDE: In collaboration with Mississippi Public Broadcasting, Mississippi Department of Education literacy coaches will participate in the Read for the Record campaign on Nov. 7 to promote a continuous awareness of the importance of oral language and vocabulary development. All elementary schools are encouraged to participate.
Jumpstart’s Read for the Record® is a national effort to raise awareness about the need for high-quality early learning for all children and the transformative power of books and reading to impact student learning and engagement. Join MPB in celebrating the power of reading as you read out loud “Thank You Omu!” to children at a school/childcare center. The book is a story about a woman named Omu who makes a thick red stew that smells so delicious, it brings neighbor after neighbor to her door. Time after time Omu shares, until there is no more stew for her! Omu is surprised when her community members bring her a special meal to show their gratitude.
Help Mississippi Public Broadcasting achieve its goal of 50,000 participants. This book ranges from PreK to 3rd grade and there are great classroom and family resources. For more information, check out www.mpbonline.org/readfortherecord .

DEPARTMENT NEWS
MSNA Conference: Mrs. Jessica Willis Receives Scholarship
Where are they now?
Do you recognize this face?
Why did you decide to start playing in band as a young student?
I have always loved music since I was a kid, and when I had the opportunity to join band in Middle School, I jumped at it immediately and never looked back.
What is your favorite FMB memory?
Two years ago at the Arkansas pep band trip, as we were marching in, most of us were singing the Campfire Song Song from Spongebob in tempo with the drum tap as we were being rained on.
What is your best MSU memory (non-FMB related)?
Meeting the person who eventually became my girlfriend has been one of my favorite moments! I eventually convinced her to join the FMB this year as a piccolo player!
What things are you involved in around campus in addition to the FMB?
When I have free time, I enjoy going to the Sanderson and take fencing classes. I also like to get involved in the Golden Triangle area as I frequently volunteer at the animal shelter in West Point.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
I want to be a keeper at a zoo or aquarium.
What’s the best part about being in the FMB to you?
I get to meet so many amazing people and march great shows with a great atmosphere. My time in the FMB is an experience I will never forget!
What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
I’m actually adopted! I was born in Carmichael, CA, and when I was finally adopted, I was flown down to the Gulf Coast, where I’ve lived ever since!
